Alright so I put my xbox 360 on sale on gumtree with all the games and stuff with it. Now today ive got 2 offers, one of which says they will offer me 800€ for it and want me to ship through fast fed ex to Nigeria as her husbands sister is working in africa.
The mailer is from America, and she said she will pay the shipping costs and the xbox 360 through paypal immediately. Can anything happen to me, I.E. if its a fake address I wont loose money will I, as in like no one will collect it.
Just Ive never done a deal like this before. Also, will paypal take a big chunk of that money, like a percentage of it?
    Thanks any help welcome.

    Its a scam

Yeah, the thing that really made me wonder, was the fact that BOTH emails asked me to send by express delivery, and qoute them the shipping charges. Neither cared about the cost and neither tried to bargain with me. No offence, but when I saw Nigeria mentioned, from waht ive heard, theres many scams there.

You should cut & paste the entire email here. Or just select a few words and put in inverted commas in google.

    e.g.

"her husbands sister is working in africa"

This will show results for that exact phrase. Often scammers are lazy and cut & paste the same thing over and over. You might find other websites with people asking or warning about the exact same person.

BTW I would be 99% sure this is a scam, in fact 100%!

    EDIT: Found this.

    The Nigeria Scam Help Page

When searching text in emails it is best to pick some with no punctuation or symbols or words which might change, like name or descriptions. Look for odd combinations of words

"i want the package to get there very fast and reliable"
    http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=%22i+want+the+package+to+get+there+very+fast+and+reliable%22&btnG=Search&meta=

"due to the matter of urgency"

    LOL at "Jason Born"!

You got an email from Jason Born in Nigeria, and you're wondering if it's a scam? Duh!

How can they scam you through Paypal? Well, the easiest is to use a cloned credit card, or a compromised Paypal account. The actual card/account holder will be given their money back, FROM YOU, and you'll lose the money and the console.

another lovely trick is to send you a cloned email from paypal that looks exactly like the emails paypal use

and is sent from a similar style email addresss like "paymentservice@paypal.com"

You get a typical email saying youve just recieved €500 and shoulfd ship the item to following address:

Some people will ship the item when the emaail from "paypal" tells them they have just recieved a payment

Yeah if Nigeria is mentioned forget it. And be very carefull as the email "paypal" send you often looks like a very genuine paypal email. You should forward it to spoof@paypal.com

As for paypal charges on legit payments. It's I think 3.4% of the amount + 35 cent.

Cannnot believe what I've seen in this thread how can some people be so evil.. Just about to sell stuff on Ebay for the first time and will definitely not be offering to ship to Nigeria.. But i thought if it was me once i got the email from paypal i would immediately check my account just to be sure (And i definitely will from now). Is there any other way other than the fake email that they can try.... Things like that would worry me

They are not evil; they are scammers. My favorite one was the American lady who spent half a mil to get her inheritance from Nigeria after having the bank, the police AND her friends telling it is a scam but her insisting she was not stupid or easily fooled.

To Kdoher; don't click any links in the Paypal/Ebay mails; they can point to some interesting places if they are faked and you're better of typing in the address yourself.

Also limit your listing to only ship to Europe; this don't stop them all but it reduces the number of dummy scams they try (it is a pain to keep on relisting an item because someone hit buy out listed in UK and insist on shipping it to Nigeria as you then have to go dispute the fees with Ebay etc.).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 kdoher

So if i list as only Europe will that stop them automatically bidding.. Had a incident recently as i live on the border there was an item i wanted to buy which was uk shipping only so have family in the north so usually use there address, in the last minute of bidding i put in the highest bid but automatically came up this bid did not register because my paypal address was not uk. Will this happen for me?

With Paypal, they can use a stolen card, or compromised account. When the card owner finds out, they'll get their money back, and you'll have it taken away. You've no choice in this, and there's bog all you can do about it.

Another scam is to pay by bank draft (fake) and they send you too much. You lodge it, and return the excess (usually by Western Union), then the bank draft bounces a week later.
