Just a friendly reminder to one and all that if i see links to streams or requests to streams, or even "smart little hints" to send streams in the forum or on profiles, I will hand out bans.

Yeah, but I've read that he's doing the match since they had already taped three weeks of Impact with him by the time he had got injured and since there's four others in the match he won't have to do much

I read a bit of an interview with Chris Sabin (I think) who was saying that he doesn't think all of the guys in the X-Division King of the Mountain match understand the rules and that the fans shouldn't try too hard to follow it. Why make it that way?!

I really don't get how King of the Mountain is so complicated, it's not THAT hard to understand.

There a TNA PPV on on Saturday morning from 11-3, it would be a safe assumption that that's Slammiversary but not for definite.

I really don't get how King of the Mountain is so complicated, it's not THAT hard to understand.

It's because there are at least three parts to it that go against what wrestling fans are used to. Just changing one thing is enough, any more and you'll end up confusing the viewer, because not every viewer pays as much attention as a hardcore fan

First there's the part where you have to hang the title up using a ladder when people are used to seeing a match end with the title being taken down using a ladder

Second is that when a person is pinned they are just out of the match for a few minutes when people are used to a pin meaning that a match is over, or at least that the wrestler being pinned is eliminated

And third is the qualifying part, where you can't win til you've done something else first (pin someone). I can't think of any other match right now where you need to qualify to win it while it's going on

And finally, it's just really hard to keep track of who's qualified and who's locked up. Then you get two guys locked up and another who's qualified and locked up and another who could hang the title but he hasn't qualified yet and it gets incredibly confusing

True its not THAT hard to understand.

But it is still far more complicated than it needs to be. Fozzy does a good job explaining the reasons why.

KOTM used to confuse the living sh*t out of me that i stopped trying to understand it and just enjoyed the match for what it was. That said, i understand where Fozzy is coming from. The first two points he highlighted, i could live with, but this part just used to confuse me so much.

And when you get confused watching something you enjoy, it leads to loss of interest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭Machismo Fan

But I understand why they have the qualifying, just hanging the belt would seem all too easy so they really had to include the eligibility bit and then they kind of had to include a punishment for being pinned. I do agree that it can become confusing over who is or isn't eligible but I think Tenay and West always did a pretty decent job of reminding the viewer who is and isn't eligible.

There are very little new ideas in wrestling, Fozzy just mentioned that he can't think of another match that requires some form of qualification during the match in order to win the match and that itself is different (and all the things Fozzy mentioned at the very least make the match different) as long as you can keep up. I think people tend to over think the match and then they get lost. It normally provides for a really good match (except for last year as the result was far too obvious, though the match itself was quite good, which isn't a problem this year) and the Penalty Box itself usually provides some cool spots. Just try to enjoy the match for what it is and don't get too caught up in the rules.

Just try to enjoy the match for what it is and don't get too caught up in the rules.

That's what Sabin said before you said it's not that complicated!

Different or original doesn't always mean better. There's a reason that KOTM had never been done before, same with reverse battle royals. There have been some good KOTM matches, but they were still confusing, and is it really that hard for the guys involved to have as good a match under less confusing rules? I would hope not. TNA's matches are sometimes more like obstacle courses or something off Gladiators than something that would decide who the best wrestler is

To be fair, every promotion has had whacko matches in the past.

WWE had the RAW Bowl, which was god-awful.
WCW Had BattleBowl and the equally terrible World War 3 Three ring battle royal.
The AWA had a Team Challenge series that was so confusing that the team that won didn't even know they won!

TNA actively seek out these sort of matches though, they don't just try them as an experiment!

Well the WCW link is there from 99-2000 crazy booking (Tower of Doom revival anyone, as if Kevin Sullivan's masterpiece wasn't bad enough in the 80s?) in Vince Russo. The WWE learned not to throw money away on crazy concepts once they came to the realisation that it wasn't their own money they were playing with, while everyone else went under.

But for as long as Dixie Carter is using daddys money, what has she got to lose?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,492 ✭✭✭EdK

Yay let's stiffle all originality, why do some of you always baulk at TNA's gimmick matches, they are trying new things yeah some of them were awful but you have to try new things and they can't exactly go having hell in a cell matches or anything, when you think about it WWE has ripped off a few recent TNA matches too including the six man tag world title match

Kotm has 3 major rules it's not higher level physics

    1. the winner of the match is the man who hangs the belt above the ring

    2. In order to become eligable to win the match ie: have control of/hang the belt you need to complete a successful pinfall

    3. The loser of any pinfall is put in the penalty box for two minutes which may result in them losing the match

    It's risk and reward;)

But there not, I just said that because a lot of people tend to over think the rules and it ruins their enjoyment of the match when in truth the rules aren't actually complicated in the slightest.

when in truth the rules aren't actually complicated in the slightest.

How can you say that with a straight face?! Especially when someone in the match has admitted that other participants don't fully understand it!

I can say that very easily with a straight face, I posted the rules of the match in the first post, can you honestly read them and say that it is a confusing match that you can't get your head around?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,492 ✭✭✭EdK

Well Sabin is either stupid or doesn't follow his own companys product but the rules should be apparent to anybody who has been in TNA as long as he has

Many of the guys in the X KoTM would obviously have never been in one so the concept and rules are new to them as competitors, I don't think come match time they'll all be standing there looking at each other going eh what now?

Btw SR I said recently not in the 1700's, that was the example that came to mind I'm sure Machismo Fan will oblige with one or two more

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭Machismo Fan

In theory no, not for me. I was able to talk about all the rules without having seen a KOTM match in two years. But in practice I've always been confused at some point in the match. And I know that not everyone pays as much attention to the whole thing as I do, so it's only going to be more confusing for them. Viewers like you and I are in the minority

But that's not the match being complicated but rather the fault of the viewer. If you don't pay attention during Lost you'll end up confused, if you don't pay attention during most sports you'll end up confused, the same applies for wrestling.

Match of Champions idea, WWE used it on Raw.
    Wrestlemania 6.

Can I ask you one thing? Do you ever watch TNA and just shake your head in disbelief at how ridiculous it is? It seems like you defend them no matter what the situation.

Title for title was done pre Mania VI too at house shows. Savage V Warrior had a really good one in February or March 89 just before Savage dropped the strap to Hogan at Mania.

I was making reference to TNA Match of Champions at Victory Road on July 15th 2007 (Team 3D vs. Kurt Angle and Samoa Joe). July 23rd 2007 on Raw: NO DQ CHAMPIONS ONLY MATCH: John Cena & Candice Michelle defeated Umaga & Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch and no I don't as I don't think TNA is ridiculous - I have two problems with TNA 1)TV match length and 2)lack of trust in the younger talent but besides that I really enjoy TNA.

That match had been done twice before in wwe though. in 95 (i think) michaels and diesel wrestled yokozuna and british bulldog (subbing for owen hart) And again in 01 with triple h and austin vs the undertaker and kane. both with the stip that if the tag champs lost they lost the titles but if the world or ic champ got pinned whoever pinned them got their belt.

But were all the company/brands champions put in the same match and did WWE not do it a week after TNA did?:) But that's not the point of the thread, Scott D'Amore and Petey Williams are both backstage (source: JB's Twitter).

Michaels was the IC titleholder, Nash was the World title holder and Yokozuna and Owen Hart were the tag title holders, but Bulldog was subbed at last minute.

Whoever pinned whoever won the respective belt. It was at In Your House 3.

 I didn't see Joe joining the mafia:eek:

    Results:
I missed the first match which was the X-Division KOTM match.

Daniels defeated Douglas with the bme in a short enough match.

    Angelina Love defeated Tara.

Beer Money Inc. defeated Team 3D.British Invasion interfered.

Sting defeated Morgan with the Scorpian Death Drop, in a slightly botchy match.

Abyss and Taylor Wilde defeated Raven and Daffney.Abyss got the win with a black whole slam onto thumthacks.

Angle won the Heavyweight KOTM.Joe and Angle were at the top of the ladder and joe handed the title to Angle, to hang it and win.

That turn was absolutely magic, I really did not see it coming. I got really excited when AJ nearly won and Foley's elbow off the Penalty Box (yes you did read that right) was insane. My viewing source cut out during the Tag title match and I only just caught the finish after seeing the first 8-10 minutes, it looked like a good match though. Suicide retained in an excellent opening KOTM match, Douglas got injured in the opening minutes of his match which is a shame as that was most likely his last big match.

Knockout match was furthering the storyline but had the right result as it wouldn't have been right for Tara to walk straight to the title in her second match. Morgan/Sting was alright for what it was and I really enjoyed the Monsters Ball but the King of the Mountain was really dramatic. Overall, a pretty damn good show with a great KOTM opener and main event.

    TNA Pre-Show:

-Lots of video highlight packages air as well as Jeremy Borash's obligatory welcome message so far. Backstage: Lauren Interviews Beer Money, Inc.
We shoot backstage and Lauren is interviewing Beer Money, Inc. Roode teased that he has sympathy for Team 3D because they just wrestled in Japan last night. Storm laughed and said you shouldn't feel bad at that, you should feel bad that an airplane had to carry Team 3D. Storm says he's been partying all night in anticipation of winning the TNA tag-titles.
-A Team 3D/Beer Money, Inc video package airs.
Rhino & Eric Young vs. The British Invasion
Tenay and West start off their commentary welcoming us to the show. Young comes out to a good crowd response. Rhino was escorted to the ring with two winners of a TNA contest. He got a huge pop. Rhino starts the match and things are going his way. He tries to tag in Young, but Young jumps off the apron and refuses the tag. Young heads backstage and leaves the match. Jesse Neal comes in Rhino's corner in street clothes. British Invasion are working over Rhino pretty good until Williams misses a big move off the top. Rhino tags in Jesse Neal. Seconds later, Brutus Magnus beats down and pins Neal quickly.
    Winners: The British Invasion
-A video package airs highlighting tonight's Monster's Ball match.

    Jeremy Borash Interviews Dixie Carter
Borash walks up to TNA owner Dixie Carter who is standing in the front row behind the barricade. Carter says TNA has come a long way and it's been a great seven years so far. She says a happy father's day message to all fathers out there, including her own - Bob Carter.
-Borash introduces the final TNA Slammiversary PPV video package.
    -The pre-show ends.

    TNA Slammiversary Opener:
A cool video package airs highlighting the seven-year history of TNA Wrestling, showing a lot of clips of famous past moments in the company.
Mike Tenay and Don West welcome us to the show and explain the rules of some of tonight's matches, such as the King Of The Mountain.
    (X Division Title)
-Jay Lethal vs. Alex Shelley vs. Consequences Creed vs. Chris Sabin vs.
Suicide (c) Curtis Granderson from the Detroit Tigers is introduced as he'll be the special time-keeper for this match. He'll also be joining Tenay and West on commentary for the match. Jay Lethal's music hits and he's out first. Alex Shelley is out next. Consequences Creed makes his entrance. Chris Sabin is out. And finally, X-division champion Suicide makes his usual mysterious entrance. All the guys stand on one side of the ring, except Suicide who stands alone on the opposite side. All guys charge Suicide and attack him. Everyone in the match is teamed up to beat down Suicide. The Motor City Machine Guns do a cool series of double-team moves on Suicide. Creed brings a ladder into the ring. Suicide with a cool spring-board move off the ropes to smash both MCMG members. Suicide takes the ladder long-ways and clotheslines all four of the other guys. Suicide with a big move on Lethal, who he pins. Jay Lethal now faces two minutes in the penalty box. MCMG and Consequences Creed do a cool series of 3-on-1 moves on Suicide. Lethal is shown in the penalty box/cage with a countdown clock showing a minute and a half left. Suicide pins Alex Shelley, who is now sent to the penalty box. Lethal still has 20 seconds left in the penalty box as well. Lethal's time is up and he's let out of the penalty box/cage and is back in the ring attacking Suicide. Lethal is now in the penalty box. Sabin throws a chair right into Suicide's face. Lethal does the Lethal Combination into an unfolded chair. All three guys "gang-pin" Suicide. Lethal gets credit for the pin, although the other two are protesting it. Countdown ends and Shelley is allowed out of the pentalty box. All guys are in the ring doing some ring-around-the-rosey celebration as Suicide is now in the penalty box. MCMG and Lethal Consequences with a cool series of moves back and forth to each other. Creed with a pin on Shelley, who is sent back to the penalty box. Suicide is let out of the penalty box. Lethal Consequences are double-teaming Suicide while Sabin is still down and Shelley is in the penalty box. Suicide flips Sabin back-first into a ladder laying diagnally across the middle ring-rope. "Holy sh*t" chant from the crowd for that. Suicide and Lethal are on the outside and Creed does a running front-flip over the top onto both guys. "TNA" chant from the crowd. The rules of this match are absolutely crazy and confusing to follow. Sabin leaps onto the ladder, jumps from there onto the top of the penalty box/cage at ringside and does a flying cross-body block off the top of that. Insane spot. Crowd is loving it. Shelley sets up the ladder in the ring. Sabin argues with him that he's not even eligable. Sabin lays down and lets Shelley pin him. Shelley is now eligable. He climbs the ladder but Suicide is let out of the penalty box and dropkicks him off the ladder from the top rope. Another cool spot. Crazy catapolt spot with the ladder teeter-totting off the top rope. Huge launch effect, awesome spot. Sabin is let out of the penalty box and he immediately clotheslines Suicide over the top rope. Huge tornado DDT off the top from Sabin onto Lethal. He pins him and Lethal is sent to the penalty box. His time passes and Lethal is let out of the penalty box. Shelley clotheslines him down. Huge frogsplash from Shelley onto Lethal. All men are down while Alex Shelley is draping a ladder on the floor across the barricade and edge of the ring. Sabin is knocked back-first across that ladder. Lethal climbs to the top and drops the big Randy Savage-elbow drop onto Sabin and the ladder. That looked painful. Huge "TNA" chant from the crowd. Suicide is on the top of the penalty box/cage and has the ladder up there with him. Creed climbs the penalty box. Meanwhile, Shelley is setting up the ladder in the center of the ring to win. Haven't been watching TNA in ages now but i'm just wondering did the turn actually make sense or was it just a swerve for swerve's sake? Does it fit in with this nation of violence stuff or does it just disregard the last few months character development?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,153 ✭✭✭Jolt2007

Seemed like a swerve for the sake of it to me. Didn't make sense at all, just because it was a surprise doesn't make it good. It was an enjoyable enough show but annoying and hard to watch at times too. Lots of spots but so soon after Misawa things just seemed so needlessly dangerous.
