    hi

i have a squier strat and the amp that came with it. pretty certain there is only a reverb button on the amp.

was playing my guitar through an amp that had a distortion button and the sound was great. if i wanted to get distortion, do i need to buy and amp that has a disotrtion button or is there and effects pedal i can get?

    thanks

You can get an effects pedal, but i'd recommend saving up some more and just buying a roland microcube. It's a great little amp with good effects and amp models built in.
You can pick one up in Xmusic for €100.

Pick one up cheaper online or even second-hand on adverts or what have you. Save the shekels.

About 50 euro delivered to your door and you get a free instrument cable with it. Picked one up this week. Great little pedal and for those with tube amps it does a great job for pushing the tubes that little bit extra

I love my SD-1, it's a great pedal. But if you're looking for a really distortiony distortion, you mightn't get what you're looking for in it.

Second hand is the way to go, imo.

If you're set on getting a pedal, I can't say enough for the ProCo RAT. (Though the newer ones - anything with a serial number greater than 3,000,000 - are supposedely rubbish after a dramatic change in parts quality). Get a second-hand one from before 3,000,000, and you'd be sorted.

YouTube is your best friend when you're looking for new pedals. Pro Guitar Shop do great demos, and there are LOTS of them.

Also check out the vox da5 amp, vt15 amp or the boss ds1 pedal. But a good amp is a better option imo.

    What?

There is nothing wrong with the DS1, the op has a squire and a cheap amp. Its not like he's playing through a JVM head or something?
The DS1 is one of the best low budget multi use distortions around.
Beside's like I said, I'd get an amp first with some decent effects. The Da5's are round 110-150 euros.

Now, I'm all into varying opinions, and finding great gear in the most unlikely of places, and the whole 'one man's rubbish...' idea, but that isn't true at all. And it's been argued to death on this board.

Any of the Danelectro Cool Cat distortion pedals will run circles around the DS1. They are, after all, clones of very well-respected, obscenely over-priced boutique pedals. Any of the Behringer distortions would probably do a much better job, too, though a lot of those are clones of Boss pedals, so you'll probably find a few DS1-alikes in the range. But there are also a generous helping of Tubescreamer clones in there.

And if you're looking for a "low-budget multi use distortion", the ProCo RAT is the full stop at the end of the sentence.

With a bit of patience and some second-hand browsing, anything can be low-budget.

Do not do yourself the disservice of buying a DS1.

I have a DS2, i don't really use it anymore as its not the kind of sound i need.
It's not the worst pedal ever, not the best either.

Used right it can sound alright. The thing is, it's a distortion pedal designed for high distortion that works best with light distortion.
    (tired, probably doesn't make sense)

But yeah, i want this as my next pedal...

I have one too. I'm returning it tomorow hopefully, and intend to buy a danelectro cool cat drive for roughly a third of the price :pac:.

The VT15 should be good, i have the 100 watt version of the older model. But the ds1? I had one of those for a week, and then passed it on!! I find it just cuts the bottom out of your sound. For an extra 20/30 euro you could get a blues driver second hand, much better pedal. Its well worth the extra money. That being said, im not really a massive fan of Boss overdrive/Distortion pedals.

However, id say get a new amp, the amps that come with the squire guitars are usualy fairly crap, which will make any pedal you use sound crap as well. The micro cube, or the vox should be the way to go. If you do get amother amp, i feel i must be the first to warn you, STAY AWAY FROM MARSHALL MG AMPS. It will not be much better than the amp you have, if any. Many beginers see the marshall logo, and think they are great, I should know, i once was one :o
