i know theres a good few threads about these schools but i cant find the answer to my question so im sorry if its been asked before!

does anyone know approximately how long in advance one would have to enrol their child? my daughters almost two and im thinking of choosing an et school for her, she'll probably be starting when shes five as her birthday is in august. would i need to do it soon?

also is there a cancelation policy if we choose a different school after enroling her? or do we just tell them we dont need the place anymore?

    thanks a million.

Ask for a copy of the enrollment policy of the school/s you wish to enroll her in, you can then read them and see what thier rules and guildlines are.

Almost all ET schools operate a first come first served policy - so the sooner youput your child on the list the better your chance of them getting a place.

Re cancellation - if your childs name is on the list and you change your mind - just let the school know and they will remove the name

If you have been offered a place - again just let them know you are taking a place in a different school - generally they will have a long waiting list and will be happy to give the place to next person on list.

BTW most people I know put their childs name down in more than one school so that they increase the odds of being offered a place somewhere - not an ideal situation - but in most areas of the country most school operate an individual enrolment list, there are a few places that have common enrolment lists for afew schools. As Thaedyl says - ask for a copy of enrolment policy and see what applies to the scholl you are interested in

Sorry to pipe in at this stage but I've only just seen it and I've an inside track due to being enrolment officer an ET school. All ET schools operate first-come, first-served. This was even discussed at the ET AGM last month. A couple reserve a few places for newcomers to the area but apart from that it's all FCFS.

My advice is to put your child's name down now - you can remove it at any time. If you receive an offer (in 2011 it appears) you can still decline it. Even if you accept the offer you can rescind it. It's no problem.

If it's Maynooth you're thinking of (purely based on you posting about Mantra :)) get the form in asap - 2011 is oversubscribed already. That's not to say that you wouldn't get a spot (a lot of names drop off every year) but the longer you leave it the lower the odds. You can get the form from www.maynoothet.ie. The full pre-enrolment rules are there too as is the enrolment policy.

thanks a million! you're a star! we dont really know where we'll be tbh so maybe we'll try a few of them. then it may turn out that we move to wherever she gets a place, as we're renting atm.

No probs at all. If you've any queries about ET at all you can ask here or PM me.

[edit]One more thing - ET schools have no catchment areas. You can pre-enrol no matter where you're living currently.
