In between many moments of insanity caused by Fianna Fail and their incompetence (except when it comes to them lining their pockets that is), I was trying to work out how many taxes we pay during the average day/week/month.
If anyone can add to the below list, I'd be grateful as its something I'm working on for a project.

    Taxes:

Council/home Tax (to be shortly introduced)
    Green tax?
    Car horse-power related tax?
Sales of Property Tax/Stamp Duty/Capital Gains Tax
    Inheritance Tax
    Tax on Food
    Fuel Tax
    Alcohol Tax
    Cigarette Tax
    Tax on Mobiles
    Tax on Landlines calls
    Airline Duty Tax
    T.V. License
    Gas VAT/Tax
    Water Rates Tax
    Electricity Tax
    Furnishings & DIY Items VAT/Tax
    VAT on Everything!
    Car Tax/VAT
Income Tax - for those of us who are still employed currently...

Anyone think of genuine ones to add to it?

    I know I don't pay Road tax lol... :D

Hell, unless the buggers come looking at it, I won't volunteer them a red bloody cent. Give them nothing, but take from them Everything

A lot of food is not taxed too. Plus you mention VAT in general but also specifically list several examples of things VAT is applied to. It makes it look a lot worse than it really is.

there is a huge amount of overlap there. you have VAT down many times... customs and excise is covered several times about.

you omitted the plastic bag levies, health levies, PRSI and income levies as well as capital aquisitions tax

Its a fair and accurate point.
What way would you alter the list? I'm just trying to accurately list the amount of different taxes one pays (along with the news ones coming in apparently). :)

Well there's the stealth taxes, charging for state services.

Tax on health, if you're charged to visit a state hospital/doctor/dentist,
    Refuse collection / bin tags,
    Annual credit card government tax

The greens are also talking about an incinerator tax and a landfill levy too (which will be of course be transferred back to consumers somewhere along the line).

Probably easier to list what is not taxed - can't imagine it will be a long list.

Internet posting tax. To be applied retroactively.

You might find it easier to compile a list of things that are not taxed at the moment...but then again we could be here for a while thinking of those.

And they probably wouldn't realise that it would be better to tax the rain instead of sunshine and rainbows.

Leprechauns will not be happy about the taxing of rainbows :pac:

The greens also feel we need a Carbon tax. So it is only a matter of time for that one to go on the list.

Vat on raincoats, wellies, hats, umbrellas, sunscreen etc etc etc., Unless you don't wear clothes, in which case you get fined/taxed for flashing.

You forgot about the Tax processing and handling fee. Someone has to pay those poor unfortunates in the RC that process all the taxes.

There is something called the Commission on Taxtion, which is looking for even more inventive ways to squeeze money out of us in the next budget. It will issue a report in september.

To add to the list - interest on savings is taxable and airport tax

I don't know how cats and bicycles have escaped so far without being taxed.

Another green one is the 'having the cheek to park your car where you work' tax.

This is all getting like mayor quimby when the hollywood film crew come to town.

Not sure if this qualifies as a stealth tax but between about September of 2007 till the middle of 2008 I got asked maybe 1/50 times on a bus/train/luas to show my ticket.
But nearly every single time I got the train after about September '08, I was asked to show my ticket.

Basically, the inspectors nearly always check for tickets these days to give them a handy 45+ euro when they catch somebody out, whereas back in the good times they rarely checked because it wasn't worth their while.
And the fact that if you check 100 people you're likely to find a person who dosen't have the right ticket or any ticket means they are likely to pull in a fair bit extra each day from catching out thrifty passengers.

Self-Employed so........annual turnover less expenses, wages, loan repayments, etc., giving a meagre profit which in turn is taxed.

(my mind is on my car as I had to tax it today)
