I switched over from Meteor Bill Pay to Meteor Pre-pay and was credited with €10 for a cock-up on Meteor's part.

So, I delete the APN, Username and Password from the Cellular Data Network settings, yet I notice yesterday that I was charged for data (ok, so it was only €0.08, but it's the principal).

How is this possible? How can any application connect without this information being present? Is there anywhere else this information could be?

    I'm on a 1st Gen iPhone, version 2.1. And I'm confused.

Maybe it only reads the settings on power up. Have you power cycled the phone?

    Are the settings still deleted?

If that was the case, you would imagine that when you enter the settings initially, you would have to power cycle it. I think...

Have powered it off and back on now anyway.
    Are the settings still deleted?

They were pre-power cycle, they are still gone post-power cycle.

I wonder is there a bit of a lag in Meteor's billing system? i.e. might the data charge have been from before you removed the apn settings.

When did you delete the settings?

If that is the case, I was on a data plan, so should have not been charged for the data either.
When did you delete the settings?

About a week ago. Basically when they sent me a text to say I had been moved from Bill Pay to Pre-pay.

There's no chance it's that bug with the visual voicemail texts is there? I remember people being charged because the iPhone was sending these messages to try and set up visual voicemail. They were some sort of special texts and people on O2 were charged as if they sent an international text message. It only affected people on prepay, not on bill pay and since you mentioned that you recently switched to prepay I thought this could be it.

Im on o2 prepay and am getting phantom data charges. Almost every day throughout the day.

The thing is I haven't used the phone outside the home and I have wifi turned on. I keep meaning to call o2 and see what the hell they are for.

Its also charging me more than 1c per 1kb.

You see, the difference being you are set up for data as you are on O2. I am not. I purposely deleted the data settings so this wouldn't happen.

To fix your problem, check your e-mail fetch/push settings. It's most likely your e-mail client checking for mail every so often. Otherwise, it could be some other program checking for updates.

I think when the screen is off, WiFi is off, but 3G is on. So if something is running in the background, and WiFi is off, it will use the 3G network.

    So that could explain it.

Yeah I think that is true - I had the openSSH server installed via Cydia and each time the screen blanked wifi would switch off and my remote terminal would freeze.

Oh I see. I noticed that E was displayed for a split second when I tuned the screen on.

I guess the only thing I can think of is the weather App.
