Just wondering if there's anywhere in college where you can go to throw around a ball etc. and not get kicked off by security. For some reason anything that constitutes a ball sport draws the uniforms faster than bees to honey. Occasionally they'll ignore you if your on the rugby pitch around lunch time but that's becoming rarer.

Does anyone actually know why they have such a problem with ball sports? It can't be to save the ground because they allow runners on the cricket pitch all the time. The only thing I can think of is theres some sort of health and safety aspect if a by stander gets hit by a ball but thats an extermely unlikely occurance especially if your out in the middle of the grass.

Can you not read the signs? "Pitch re-seeded. Keep off"

College is not Butlins. There are people trying to do research. Having a bunch of goons playing rounders outside your window is not conducive to world-class research.

I saw that sign earlier and it was most amusingly surrounded by birds pecking at the grass.

Oh damn I'm sorry, next time I'll be sure to inform you beforehand so that you can turn your desk around. I wouldn't want the sight of people enjoying themselves on their lunch hour to distract you from your life encompassing research.

Perhaps you haven’t noticed in your 20 odd years on this earth but people do occasionally like to have some time outside work. Maybe if you took your head out of your ass once in a while you might have noticed that out of everyone in your research group you're the only life devoid monkey who toils at their desk day in, day out. You might notice the other people doing this research you defend with such religious zeal actually have other pursuits and like to blow off steam by, oh I dunno, throwing a ball around at lunch.

To everyone else who managed to actually provide an intellectual reply rather than a rant. I realise that the rugby pitch is currently been reseeded hence why this question comes up; usually we are let be when we’re on the rugby pitch. As to the cricket requiring an even surface, I fully realise that and would never attempt to even walk across the crease, however even when we tried to play in the out of the way south west corner we were kicked off.

It just seems wrong that a couple of mates can't throw a ball around for 15 mins during their lunch hour, before getting back to their research. If this keeps up we might all end up as cantankerous as Cantab, I shudder at the thought.

Can we have some sticky somewhere telling people to not take him so seriously.

Or is this some lesson we have to let new/unfamiliar people learn by themselves.

Seeing as you feel so strongly about it, why don't you put yourself forward as a student rep on the DUCAC committee?

The people who matter in the College (i.e. the faculty) set the rules. If you don't like them, either go elsewhere or set up your own college.

As I said before, Trinity is not Butlins.

And when you and your play mates (disc-throwing currently being in vogue) are long gone, the work of the university will continue.

And yet the frisbee throwing mates will live as long if not longer

One wonders if Bavaria-drinking scruffily clad undergraduates will still be playing frisbee on College Park in another 400 years' time.

Cantab, would you ever turn your phone and interact with your real-life friends?

On the subject of this thread: Can one not play at the little park at the end of College Park? I think it's permitted there.

People like to waste time, more than likely not frisbee no, but some other "non-productive" pass-time

Why does everyone jump to attack Cantab.?

Is it better that everyone have the same opinion and have nothing to talk about?

I think Cantab just won the internet.

I imagine the reason is that DUCAC only have insurance for sanctioned events. I don't think its about damaging the pitch because they put people off the rugby field and its a mess. Though they are more protective of the cricket pitch.

Cantab., I think you may need to lighten up just a little, although I suspect you like being a curmudgeon, maybe even revel in it. Very little of the academic areas overlook the playing fields [apart from the BLU], and people playing ball aren't that noisy. In fact the traffic from Nassau st is louder.

I assume Cantab is simply a wind-up merchant, and is actually a genius. I mean, this sentence : "Having a bunch of goons playing rounders outside your window is not conducive to world-class research." had me in bits laughing.

I concur that it's frustrating not having somewhere to kick a ball around (or throw a ball, as per the OP).

My favourite bit about Cantab. is that he's like a plaque tablet for new people because they just go off at him as if he was totally serious and not just controversial about everything.

Someone cut off the top of this thread and rename the rest "What I like about Cantab."

If Cantab. was a troll then there'd be slight inconsistancies among his postings.Rather, he always makes sure to place great emphasis on order, tradition and authority.

Sadly (for him), the majority of what he probably considers the intellectual elite are of a far more liberal leaning.

If Cantab. is a troll, I commend him on his mastery of the art.

If he is genuine, then I'm glad his views are seen as extreme and controversial.

There is no sense of the word "liberal" which advocates the abandonment of tradition.

    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/liberal

having social and political views that favour progress and reform

I would have thought that "reform" implies the abondonment of tradition, provided of course there is some sort of negative aspect to the traditional way of doing things.

    No, Dubl.

Are you sure? A very Quick Google and Wikipedia search would suggest (Dub.)...
    William A. K. Warnock, B.A. (Mod.) (Dub.), LL.B. (Dub.)
    Niall W.A. Geraghty, B.A. (Mod.) (Dub.), Ph.D. (Dub.), M.I.C.I
Peter Corcoran, B.A. (Dub.), B.A.I. (Dub.)
    Daniel R. Carey, B.A. (McGill), M.Phil. (Dub.), D.Phil. (Oxford)
    Niall Ó Ciosáin, B.A. (Dub.), Ph.D. (Eur.Univ. Inst.)
    Micheline J. Sheehy Skeffington, B.A. (Mod.) (Dub.), D.E.A. (U.S.T.L.), Ph.D. (Dub.)
    James Jude Bridgeman B.A.(Mod.), M.A.(Dub.)
    University of Dublin (Dub)

Dubl is traditional and Dub is modern. To hell with modernity.

Even the Oxford University Calendar has abandoned Oxon and Cantab. It now uses Oxf and Camb -- and Dub.
