Am thinking of getting new cycling shoes and making the big switch from SPDs to Look KEO.

    (1) What are the advantages if any of Look Keo?

    (2) Please recommend a pair of road shoes (at most 150 euros). WOuld be great if the colour was summery.

    (3) Finally, I have seen a pair of Northwave shoes that I like the look if and they seem really good value. Anybody have any experience of these type of shoe?

    Thanks

    These, these, these, or these

And get Time RXS pedals, or if you want low weight, get speedplay zero

Have a pair of Northwave and beside looking like a Zebra they are not bad. I have a wide foot so they fit quite well. But Sidi seem to be the most popular!

I went the other way round - from Look Keo to SPD - because I prefer the double-sided entry of SPD pedals. (They're quicker to get into/out of and tou never need to look down.) I also prefer being able to walk like a human rather than a stork in ice skates. But maybe that's just me...

Speedplay are double sided, like spd, but you won't pull out of them so easily, and have a wide enough platform (like other road systems) :)

the bearings on my look keo classics seem pretty rough after about a year so might want to go for the sprints (only £10 more on crc at the mo) if you go for look at all
my old look reds are in better shape after 20 years tbh

actually had them 2 years (CRC order history .........scary)

I am moving to a road system myself, probably Time RXS or Speedplay. Have already got the shoes, Sidi Genius 5.5 Carbon Composites- secondhand but near perfect nick off another boardsie. Seem nice but haven't tried them on the bike yet. I am really doing it for racing as I have clipped out accidentally a few times in sprints. Not a big problem with double-sided pedals as I can bash back in... I would consider Speedplay on that basis only really but not sure if it is necessary if I am not going to clip out once I move to a road system.

Not 100% sure if it is really necessary to switch unless you are racing, I will be leaving SPDs on my other bikes.

Interested in a new pair of shoes too so will be keeping an eye on the replies. Sticking with the Look Pedals. TBH they all have their advantages and disadvantages so I'm just sticking with what I am comfortable with. Gotta love the solid clack of the Look pedals engaging :)

    wrong, wrong, wrong

    33. Pedals MUST be either Look or Time. No other pedals are to be considered. (as always, ANY form of Shimano product is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN).

    euro rules
the fact that I look terrible in lycra, have shimano, wear black socks with white shoes, in no way disqualifies me from quoting euro rules

im also looking at getting a new pair. Keep up with these suggestions ;-)

I'll be keeping the looks anyway. Have carbons on the Tri bike and Classics on the road and i am happy thus far. Those SIDI Genius 5.5 Carbon Composite look nice. Do most places stock them in town? I dont know if i want to buy online as i like to try on shoes etc to make sure they fit.

Yes, I miss the Look clack now that I rub spuds.

    Do Times clack or click?

Yep. Have a lot of float too if you like that sort of thing, can be dialled out if not.

Yes, but do they click or do they clack? Is it a nice sound?

    It's closer to a cleuck. I think it's a splendid sound.

I don't miss any clicks now that I use Five Ten's.

No, it sounds more like Serge Gainsbourg clearing his throat.

+1 for Speedplays. Couldn't get my old Shimano Cleats adjusted to get rid of knee pain. Got a pair of the cheaper Speedplay "Light Action" version and pain vanished almost immediately.

Got a pair of northwave vertigo couple months ago.The good points are comfortable, great if you have sweaty feet.If you have wide feet they are excellent.I am sorry i did not get a carbon sole.If you suffer from hot spots northwave shoes seem to be pretty good.I think they look good as well, but because the sole was not the stiffest i could not live with it.Got a pair of shimano 132 stiff good performance no where near as comfortable as the northwave gets a bit hot on longer distances but because the sole is carbon its a bettershoe.hope this helps oh have time rxs pedals i think they are really good pedals.

Damn you Last Gap, I had just decided on the Time RXS!

EDIT: thank you horizon26, I think I will order tomorrow morning.

Hi Blorg, Sorry for confusing things ! Just got the Shimano 132's too, waiting for new Speedplay Cleats to arrive for them. I'm going to have to bung up the "vent" (= big bloody hole !) in the soles - my feet freeze even in mid-summer ! Anyone got suggestions what would seal it well ? Was thinking of Plastic Padding type Epoxy Filler.

Candle wax worked on my small holes. How big is big?

I'm in need of new MTB shoes. Need to be very usable off the bike. Haven't bought a pair for a few years now, any suggestions?

I have these. They're fine for walking round the office/out to lunch/supermarket/Wicklow 200, although obviously still a cycling shoe, not a walking shoe with cleats.

Cheers Lumen I had seen that earlier thread all right. I was thinking of something more permanent. Candle Wax is great for small screw holes, flowing into small gaps, threads etc - I had done that in my old shoes. This vent is an open hole about 2cm long, 8-9mm wide at one end, and tapering to about 5mm other end.

OK, that's a big hole. Maybe silicone sealant. Epoxy filler sounds very permanent (but maybe that's what you want!).

Freaky - not only do we have most of the same cycling gear, but you have the same shoes as me.

This has to stop. Are you like my thin doppelganger or something???

Okay, feel free to disregard the opinion of a POB, but I went from spd to look because the shoe was shinier, rather than any technical merit, and I'm going back to spd because:
    a) look cleats are impossible to walk
    b) after even a small bit of walking on tarmac they have worn sufficiently to be a very difficult to clip in
    c) the pedal is plastic, the cleat is plastic. If I fail to clip in my spd at a right turn I can still pedal unclipped on the underside (metal/rubber on metal, reasonable friction). Try this with the looks and I'm liable to catastrophic failure.

I also failed to find the guaranteed 10% power increase.
If anyone wants a rarely used pair of size 41 road shoes and entry level look keo pedals, PM me.
