Hard disk gone ?

I got a computer from a relative from mine and she told me it had viruses on it and wheni recieved it it wasnt booting up. It just seemed to be completly crashed. Geting the blue screen when trying to boot in safe mode. So i thought it would be a straight forward vista install. Now when i ty to install it i get a message…

So i thought it would be a straight forward vista install.
Now when i ty to install it i get a message that no device driver is found . Thought it might be the disk so i tried to load xp just to see. I get a message that no hdd is found.
But what puzzles me is that if the hdd was gone would vista not even attempt to load when i turn it on ? it also seems to be showing up in setup too.
Im very confued about this so any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
