We’ve all been there: imagining a room filled with 200 people, waiting with baited breath as the Captain rises to announce the winner. “And with an incredible score of 47 points, the winner of this year’s Captain’s Day is [insert your name here]. The room erupts with applause, you blush modestly as you walk towards the Captain and your head is spinning as you realise you’ve captured the BIG ONE. You shake hands and then he hands you your prize… yes, a ceramic, life-size heron, holding a golf ball in its beak.

So, when you win a big prize, what would you like it to be?

Tipperary/Galway etc. Crystal vase/glasses/bowl etc
Bottles of wine
Golf/Pro Shop Voucher
Golf equipment (Driver, clothing, trolley…)
A weekend away (so you can tell your missus about every shot)
A lamp/heron/goblin golfer or other novelties
Newbridge Cutlery set

Ha like the thread

I would not mind what it is really. Its only the cream on top of the cake. I would be more happy about playing good golf and the reward for me would be my handicap coming down and knowing that I have a game better than my handicap dictates.

If I had to pick something it would be golf related but then again it would be nice to have a fancy piece of engraved crystal with your name on it so when you look back in years to come you remember how good you felt that day

I agree with this (I'm not stalking you btw!) - shooting a score good enough to win the competition would be reward enough for me, but if I won a prize and was able to choose I'd go with the golf/pro-shop vouchers if I'm feeling selfish and want to spoil myself, or with the weekend away if I want to prove to the OH that being a golf widow actually has its merits!

Crystal for a big prize for me.. keeps the OH happy and is a more permanent reminder... A nice carafe or bowl something that will bring back the memory of the day when you have friends over.. and an excuse to remind them how you got it (again) :)
Voucher or clothing/equipment is fine more more normal prizes.

Great thread!

I always have to laugh when they give a putter, or driver as a big prize... It's like, "I just had nett 66... you can pry my current putter out of my cold, dead hands!!" ;)

Best prizes I've won have been a Bushnell range finder, and a Nike Sumo driver. Neither of which I actually wanted but got full credit for both and got stuff I really needed - covered the bulk of 2 vokey wedges and a set of irons!

From a golfing point of view, I'd vote for a proshop voucher, but on a big day, I think there needs to be more than just an envelope so if there's a nice trophy, fine, or if there's no trophy, a flashy club that can be traded in can look better than a voucher.

That said, the weekend away is probably the best of the lot.

Golf equipment for me. Yes winning is the primary thing but as kevin says quiet rightly waiting for your name to be announced as winner only to get some worthless piece of cr@p is so disappointing. I remember my brother in law won his first ever comp and won a fire screen with 2 stags standing in front of a waterfall. On the way home it was chucked over the ditch:D

Played in a comp about 2 months ago in Claremorris , 2.5 hour from Dublin and i live in Wicklow.

Now bearing in mind that my dad 60th birthday was on the saturday evening in Dublin. So i drove up Sat morning, played Stableford/stroke and i won the nett comp. Drove down to dublin for my dads 60th, stayed over at my parents and then drove back to Claremorris up for sunday comp which i played brutal. After the sunday comp, i recived my prize.:pac:

Guess what it was...a weekend for 2 adults for 2 nights in CLAREMORRIS. Now the wife was delighted but i couldnt think about it cause i was shattered on Sunday evening!!!!

Suppose a voucher for me, but as Sheet says there kind of has to be something up there on the table on view when everybody's going out, not a little white envelope sitting there all alone.

There has been a trend in recent years in my club towards electrical equipment, namely big bad-ass flat screen TV's, which is an excellent prize IMO.

As mentioned earlier, crystal is nice maybe ten or fifteen years after you've won something to look back on it, but at the time it never seems great, especially if you're under 50 and your house isn't like an episode of Antiques Roadshow.

Great thread
I voted for pro shop voucher which I think is a good prize for most competitions during the year but for the likes of scratch cups, captains, vice-captains and presidents + any more I cant remember I think a nice bit of crystal on a nice mount with the comp name scribed on it if ye can understand what m tryim to explain.

Well I'd have to go with the weekend away. Missus would be happy!!!! And you never know, you might enjoy it as well;)

Crystal is great but if your missus is like mine it has to be the right cut to match her collection;) Most likely it will not.

There has to be something to present that looks the part. So a really nice perpetual trophy in crystal might do the trick.

Yea, it would, but there won't be many clubs who will say "well done for such a great win on our golf course - now here are some vouchers for a better golf course"...

So what happens if you won a comp in Dublin city/lepoardstown/hazelgrove and da winners prize was a 4 ball voucher at the same club...would you be delighted???

Friend of mine won gross in claremorris and won 4ball in Glasson golf club...not bad!!!

Weekend away or a fourball for a top club for me,being from waterford ,crystal does not carry the same appeal for me but in saying that i have seen guys win beautiful waterford crystal prizes over the years.

Have been extremely lucky in the past and came in to win two Captains and a Presidents Prize in two Societies that I play with. The initial post is so true and its a great feeling to hear your name called out and the walk up to get the prize. On each occasion I received Waterford Crystal and I must say I still get a wave of satisfaction each time I take a glance at them in their respective display places.
But, I have plenty of Crystal and Trophies now and would rather a golf related item now than more "dust collectors" as the other half calls them!!
In saying that, I paid €15 to play in a Clubs Open Singles and won the Gross prize on the day. It was a fine looking utility wood and looked quiet acceptable in the prize table but when I went to see if I could swop it for something more suitable I was told it was currently on sale in the shop for €20!!
My €20 club now takes pride of place in my second set in the garage!:D
