Housemartins in garage

I've just moved into a new house and my new garage has a pair of housemartins in the eaves. I have a vintage car and the nest is just above the centre of the garage. There are bird droppings all over the garage. When I moved into the house the garage door was broke therefore giving easy access for the birds but I have since fixed it. I don't want to leave the birds without a nest (not sure if the eggs are in it) so I have left the door open and haven't transported the car to my new place yet. My question is what to do? My tools/workbench and car will get destroyed if I leave them nest there but I cant bring myself to locking the door securely and have the chicks die. Suggestions?

Polythene sheet and cover everything, dispose of it when they have fledged, is about the best I can come up with! You will have to be quick when they do fledge though as they will more than likely start a second family.

Ditto : Just get some covering to throw over everything. Plenty around.
You won't have long to wait now before they leave the nest!
My Dad left his shed door open last year and a swallow nested on top of the bleedin garden hose.
We couldn't use it for the whole duration of the nesting :D

More likely to be swallows I would suggest. H Martins usually nest outside, under the roof of the house, Swallows usually nest indoors in old barns, garages,, etc. Colouration similar, but you'll notice red colour under the throat of the swallows (bib), plus more pronounced V in the tail feathers.

I went into the garage yesterday and found one of the birds on the ground under the nest and he was dead. I hadn't been in there in the last few days and it looks like he died a while ago. The rest of the birds have now left. Thank you for your responses.
