a friend of mine today received a crossed cheque payable to him from a service company. trouble is my friend has no bank or financial account and seems to be in trouble in cashing said cheque. i have a business and normally would be placed in the past to slip such cheques into my account without bother, but for the last year such crossed cheques are being returned. so what does my friend do, and he says he does not wish to open a bank account(i dont know why), but is there a solution?.

i would imagine a number of foreign nationals get paid with crossed cheques and they too have no accounts, so how do they cash in?.

Go back to who he got it off and ask them for another means of payment.

If it's crossed with "Payee A/c only" or something similar, then it's either ask the sender to transfer the funds in another (more modern way) and tell your friend to open a bank account. No legitimate person can survive without one in the 21st century.

I'm being serious when I say this, your friend should get a bank account. IMO there's no logical reason to be without one considering the amount of transactions that are carried through same these days.

You might say he has no passport or the like, then he needs to go to the garda station and get an ML 10 form. No proof of address? Register to vote! Once your name is on the register that is sufficent proof.

If you make the effort it's not such a big deal TBH.

It's a little known fact, but the ML10 form should only be accepted as a form of ID from Irish Nationals who do not have a passport or driving licence (so really there are very few cases where this would actually be needed). What it basically is, is the Garda is signing to say that they personally know that the person who's applying for the ML10 is who they say they are. Unfortunately, many Gardai and bank staff aren't aware of this.

OP, I'm not making assumptions here, but where is your friend from and has he got the proper permit to work here?
