Thought I get this up and running with this one. (perhap an old thread)

Best course you've ever played and why?

For me its got to be one of the following..

Macreddin Golf Club (my home club) = 18 different interesting holes, tee box perfect location and greens are first class. You wont be disapponted with this one. Perfect location

The European Club = What an experince, great looking course, greens, fairways top class!!!

TPC Scottsdale - On a roasting November morning LoL..

In Ireland I would have to say Portmarnock love the place

Id Have to say Adare, where the irish open was on in 07 and 08,
Beautiful course, every hole adds that little bit of its own touch and it keeps you thinking about every shot you take. Stunning finishing hole then just sums up the whole experience.
    imo.

    The old course at Vilamoura.

Friends of mine had a house 400 metres from the place,We'd play a round in the afternoon and then meet the girls on the terrace.Happy times...

I haven't played many courses out of Ireland but my top two are easy......I'm not sure which way to put them though......

    1 Royal County Down

    2 Royal Portrush

Home: Royal Co. Down. My expectations were high and I was still blown away. Setting, variety of holes, condition...the list is endless.

Away: Played quite a few leading courses in the US and could put quite a few here but Ill pick Harbour Town in Hilton Head. Extremely tight for a US course with possibly the smallest greens I've come across over there. Close second and third would be Harding Park and Stadium at TPC Scottsdale.

Good course and the best toasted ham and cheese sandwiches in the world..

    Royal County Down

Its setting at the foot of Sleive Donard is unlike anything else and it is always in amazing condition.
The holes are as diverse and tough as they are beauitful and walking over the brow of the hill on hole 9 is as good as it gets.
Its almost a religious experience playing there and to know that the worlds top players of every era have played there before you is special.
The only criticism I have is that in intertwines with the Annesly course on the back nine which detracts from the feeling of solitude and isolation you get on the front nine.

Im a big fan on the European Club aswell but its not in the same league as RCD in my opinion.

Ireland: Adare, stunning course with that wow factor. Also, I played it 3 times in 1 week for only €20

Away: Havent played many outside of Ireland, but I'd say Penina in Portugal.

The London Club is one of the best away courses that I've played.

At home the Old course at Ballyliffen is probably my favourite although a lot of links courses could have made it.
In terms of Parkland courses Adare is my favourite in Ireland although I suspect that is going to change on the 1st of July when I play Lough Erne. I've walked most of the course and it looks brilliant. If only I had the money for membership. It'll definately be able a test for the British Masters Next year.

At home Concra wood in castleblaney or Druids Glen.

Away I loved Monte Mayor on the costa del sol.

Concra woods is a fantastic course.

In Ireland it would have to be Ballybunion old, during the summer it's always in fantastic condition. The 15th is the greatest par 3 I have ever played and the 11th off the back markers is a classic as well.

Abroad it would have to be Baltusrol in New Jersey where the 2005 US PGA was held, the trees are an unbelievable height, the course is always manicured to an inch of its life and it's greens are like putting on glass!!

Away - Old Course, Villamoura (although a new boy on the circuit there, Laranjal is very nice too)

I caddy in Adare and have played it a few times so that novelty has worn off...

Loved the European Club , Lahinch, Ballybunion old and new, Enniscrone, The Island and a few more..

But the grand daddy of them all is where I play most of my golf these days, Portmarnock Old...gets better every time...a brilliant golf course

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14 pok90

portmarnock is definitely the best course in this country. rcd is great but portmarnock is a different breed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 315 ✭✭jukebox2310

I think the PGA National is a good test of golf. Maybe not for all golfers but for mid handicappers like myself it is certainly a challenge. As opposed to a lot of courses where I hit a drive and a PW/9 iron I found I had to think a lot more about the shots I was playing. Also ther Par5s are real risk/reward shots with a lot of holes there forcing you to lay up.

Only new to golf this year so haven't played enough courses here to be able to make a worthwhile contribution. Might take off some day and do a Kevin Markham on it. ;)

Have played the Old Course in Vilamoura - wow. Probably the nearest I'll ever get to Augusta.

Great thread, looking forward to playing some of the other boardsies favourites.

I've played Ballyliffin Old Course on the Inishowen Peninsula, twice when visiting my mate Dave in Donegal. Its some place. As remote as you can get, and such a natural venue.
The sun doesn't get up til nearly 9am in January because of the surrounding hills. I went out early one morning, and played 18 holes. The 14th hole runs parallel with beach. I was the only person on the course, listening to the sea crashing in, it felt like you were the only person in the world.
Greens and fairways are excellent. Hospitality is second to none.

Well I'm going to break my choices into two. Parkland and Links.

Parkland: Mount Juliet, Macreddin hard to seperate the expierence.

Links: European Club, The Island both great and far superior to the more established Portmarnock.

Although I’m not giving my favorite course, I played two very good courses recently (Ballyliffin & PGA National) and here’s my two cent worth.

Without a shadow of a doubt I really preferred Ballyliffin. Noted that they are two totally different types of golf courses.

I played the old course (which I played for €40) and thought it was spectacular. The scenery, the condition of the course were both brilliant. The fairways were tight and sometimes you get lucky with the rough, the ball might be sitting nicely, however this is not always the case! The PGA National which I played for €60 in an open singles event, (normal green fee Tuesday-Thursday €130 - Friday-Sat €160) is an absolutely lovely course but in my opinion no way worth €130 a round, not to mention €160. Green Fee prices are expensive as it is but this is just crazy. The fairways are very fair for a championship course, not that I think there’s anything wrong with this. May I say the PGA national is a little over rated, or maybe I was expecting a little too much. Courses like Concra Wood or the Slieve Russell are just as good when the price is taken into account.

Sorry to be getting off topic but I really appreciated Ballyliffin and will look forward to going back there to play the other course which is top of the agenda!

Can't seperate these. Waterville/European Club. Two outstanding courses. I have played abroad including the Old Course at St Andrews but nothing compares to these two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Screed

Parkland: Adare, Headfort New, Heritage, Mount Juliet has grown on me over the years, Boston Granite Links (if you get the chance).

    Links: Tralee, Troon

Carne, Belmullet - What can I say. Just a fantastic landscape and the best course I've ever played. It has everything, undulations, hills, bigger hills, rock hard fairways, softer fairways, lightning fast greens, gale force winds, stronger winds and lots more hills and dunes. Breath-taking. Playing there is like going on a voyage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Haven't played too many courses, but would have to say the most enjoyable course I've played is The Heritage, very challenging, and very interesting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 431 ✭✭1967

Hard to pick one, for parkland between Adare,K Club (Palmer Course)Mount Juliet played it so many times over the years probably take it for granted but still a top golf course, and for the setting Old Head.Links would be European and Lahinch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,160 ✭✭✭randomer

Another person who is new to golf, so haven't played many courses. During the week I played Castleknock and was really impressed. Way better than any courses I have played to date. I am thinking about playing Lutrellstown next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭Boden08

Played a fair few of the aforementioned so for Parklands: Prefer Mount Juliet to K Club, and really love the new course in Headford and Adare Manor too. Honourable mention to Carlow which is a great club course
Links: Portmarnock, ahead of Ballybunion (Old Course) and Royal Dublin which I've more experience of than the first two and enjoy. I'm not as big a fan as many of the European - those bunkers are dangerous. Also got out on the New Course in St. Andrews but wouldn't compare it to our best.
For character and uniqueness, I've a soft spot for a course of less quality - Connemara Isles - it's so natural and scenic.
Played a bit in Portugal, but wasn't on the oft-mentioned Old Course in Vilamoura - certainly would rate Vila Sol near there though - lovely course.

Think I have to be honest in that the weather, course conditions, company and quality of play on the day usual colour the overall impression, but any of the above are always enjoyable.

Best reputation wise was Torrey Pines South Course a few months before it hosted the Open, was setup tough enough but nothin really special.

The best purely from a playing point would either be The European Club (especially off the back!!!) or Portmarnock Old Course.

Give the new holes in Corballis a go too lads!!!

Parkland wise it has to be Mount Juliet for me. Always in great condition and the atmosphere of the place is fantastic. Super test too. Concra Wood might challenge it in the years to come. Breathtaking scenery.

I think links is harder to choose but my favourite is Waterville. Great scenery, some great holes and a nice atmosphere. Gotta mention Dooks for the scenery..amazing.
