Cross border car hire - DE/AU ?

We are hoping to head to Zell am See in Austria in July, but it looks like it will be easier and a whole lot cheaper to fly to Memmingen with Ryanair and drive across the border than to fly to Vienna and drive or get the train from there.

I will contact the car hire companies and see what they say, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experiences to report of hiring in Germany and driving to Austria ? I have a funny feeling that when you hire a car in Ireland you can't take it to Wales or Scotland, but I can't see that type of restriction working too well 'on the mainland'.

No problem with Hertz to take car from Germany into France, so I doubt if Austria would be a problem either.

Don't know about others as I've only ever used Hertz in Germany.

I've never seen a car hire company that would have a problem with D-A. Many will have a problem with you going to, say, Czech and some will even quibble about Italy depending what class of car you get.

It won't be a problem. However, you should know that Austria requires you to have a high-vis vest in the passenger compartment and can fine you if you don't. Ditto for dipped headlamps during the daytime. Austrian hire cars come preconfigured for this, for German cars you'll have to remember it yourself. For the vests, many rental firms equip the cars with them as standard. Others will offer to sell you one.

If you are truly concerned the Sixt WILL do Cross Border because I hired a German Reg Car in Paris.

Thanks all - we went with Hertz in the end. They didn't specifically say that you couldn't do cross-border and the posts here indicate that we should have no problem so I'm just going to pick it up and drive on.

Thanks for the tips on the high-viz & the dipped headlights. We will bring over our own spare high-viz jackets.
