Did anybody watch this, is it any good? Does it put him in a good light, or did the WWE do an Ultimate Warrior on him?

Watched a couple of hours of it and so far (up to his steel cage match with Debiase) its putting him in a pretty good light.

What really struck me though was just how good a team Ventura and Monsoon were on commentary.

They are the best commentary team ever, without a doubt.

It's just a collection of matches, isn't it? No documentary or feature like others

Oh, I dunno - haven't seen it. Does that mean he might be up for the next HOF? I'm actually suprised that it has received so little attention. Macho Man & Hogan were the two biggest name wrestlers when I grew up.

It's a match compilation, ala Eddie's last one and Edge's one. So there isn't gonna be much discussion about him. More about the storylines behind the matches.

Doesn't particularly mean so. It took the Von Erichs over a year since their DVD release to make it to the WWE hall of fame. So it's hard to say really.

It was only released very recently, in fact WWE put Savage's bio in the alumni section to promote it.

Have most of these matches seperately and they're worth checking out. The story behind a lot of his feuds were quite gripping though, and the lack of those storylines on that DVD is what will let it down rather badly.

Other than that, it'll be worth every red cent.

Thanks ShawnRaven. The video stores here stopped trying to keep up with WWE [and UFC] DVDs when Zavvi [formerly Virgin] closed .

I would doubt that he will get in the HOF if its true about Vinces dislike of the man (not to mention if other things are true) the DVD imo just means McMahon decided there was money to be made.

Is it true that there is no bio story to the set?

I've heard this, but there has never been any solid evidence to support it from what I've seen. Maybe it's true..

Creative writers over the years have always been telling Meltzer that whenever Savage is brought up by someone Vince reacts in a way that he doesn't with anyone else, he just won't accept any discussion. He's been really paranoid about this recession, and even more so since Obama got elected, downsizing parts of the company significantly, so his feeling was reported to be that they've got to make money any way they can and there's no point in sitting on something like a Savage DVD that's sure to make some cash

Yep, it's like the Eddie Guerrero and Edge sets, and the Rock and Austin sets. All match collectives.

From Lanny Poffo's shoot interview. Savage basically told McMahon to f*ck himself after Vince told him that he'd never use him as a full time worker because he felt he was getting on in age. Savage took that very badly and made a couple of calls to WCW, where he'd eventually go on Hogan's recommendation to Bischoff.

Only problem was, he didn't bother telling Vince he was going until the day of the RAW tapings (back then, RAW was one week live, then three weeks taped).

About a year later Luger did the same thing, only WCW didn't have Nitro then, they were still running on their two shows, Worldwide and Saturday night.

Personally i'd believe Lanny Poffo over some internet dirt site. :)

It was a great match, but Savage has had better. But the storyline worked well for a buildup considering they added in the angle after the match was made.

For me personally, it would be Savage/Steamboat at Mania III, closely followed by Savage/Bret from Saturday Nights Main Event later that year. Savage/Jake also had a very good Heel vs Heel match in 1986 too, which knocked spots off their Tuesday In Texas match in November 1991.

k just watched it all, decent account of his career. would have been cool to have an interview though.

They would have made an utter hash of it. The documentary of the Starrcade one was terrible, covered 83-87 in depth, and then skimmed through 1990-2000 in five minutes with the entire doc running at 54 minutes or thereabouts.

WWE's documentaries have gone to sh*t lately, and with the direction the company has taken in recent months, don't be surprised if we don't get a lot of documentaries in their DVDs for quite some time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭deanodrummer

Looking forward to this one. I knew we wouldn't get a documentary but at least we're getting a dvd so I wont complain.

Gotta throw my 2 cents in here I would say his match with Flair is my personal favourite. Maybe not his best, but WM 8 has a nostalgic factor for me that no other event has. Was a quality match though.

    Honourable mentions would be
    vs Warrior WM 7
    vs Warrior SSlam 92
    vs Steamboat WM 3

    vs Warrior SSlam 92

I cannot favour this match at all. Warrior screwed with the booking at the 11th hour to give us that bogus finish. Warrior was supposed to go over and turn heel on Savage to side with Hennig & Flair that night, that's why the title match was plonked in the middle of the card, so that they wouldn't send the fans home pissed off. By booking Davey to win from Bret later on in the last match was to seal that deal.

I know Warrior was an ass at the best of times but I did enjoy the actual match, screwy finish aside. That and the IC match were the only good ones on that show but it definitely benefitted from the ''big show'' feel.

Btw, I loved Hogan/Savage WM 5. Hogan's best match and a masterclass in storytelling, from it's inception at WM 4 all the way through the whole year. Current WWE writers could learn from this. Looking back Hogan should have been the heel(and maybe should have been through his whole run).

He was in my book! I was, and still am to this day, a huge Savage mark. When you see the part Hogan played in all of that, stealing the spotlight n the team, making the moves on Liz, leaving Savage to fend for himself in a tag match against two of the biggest guys in the promotion at that time. Savage was perfectly justified with his actions, but yet the crowd still cheered Hogan.

    Bunch of f*cking sheep. :D

Oh yeah you're on the money there man. Wat an ass. I was a Hogan mark back in the day, he was my hero. (I was like 3 when I started watching.) Was watching some classic stuff the other day and Hogan was raking dude's back, biting, eye gouging. He was even a heel in his move arsenal. :p

Was watching Vintage Collection the other day and there was a cage match on it with Savage/DiBisase. Is that included on the dvd? I know 2 of their matches are on it but dunno which ones. Great feud that was. Would have liked to see it go on longer.

To be fair, Savage always wrestled heel style, even when he was face. ;)

They had a couple of Steel cages matches together in 1988, but if it's the MSG one where Virgil climbs the cage and a fan jumps the rail and climbs up after him, then yeah it's on it. It's also on the Macho Madness VHS that was released in 88 too.

They had a really good one where Savage rams DiBiase into the buckle too hard in the first minute of the match and busts his nose! Ouch :D

Yeah but Savage wasn't ''Superman'' like Hogan was. I know what you mean though.

Always nice to see some real blood in those matches. :p
And yeah, that's the match that was on VC. Crazy kid. It's funny though he could climb a cage quicker than any of the wrestlers. The lad would clean up in ladder matches. :D

Funniest part is seeing Virgil kicking him in the head and straight into the arms of the security. :D

In ring work maybe, not sure we'll ever know about main event draw cos Hogan wouldn't really get out of the way in 1987 when Savage was white hot thanks to the rub.

    Shame really

for me it has to be the retirement match at wm between mach and the warrior. alright, i accept the fact the warrior was an absolute mess in the ring but the way that savage tells the story of not winning after dropping what feels like 4 million elbows for the top is just unbeatable!!

That was one of Warriors better matches, along with the two he had with Rude at SNME and Summerslam in 1990 and the one he had with Hogan. After Savage delivered the five elbows, Warrior then gave Savage five shoulder tackles. As a 15 year old mark at the time, i genuinely thought Savage was gonna kick out.

Rock is no longer with the company and already got a bio DVD in 2002.

Edge, i guess they just wanted to showcase his actual matches. And theres plenty of time for a bio DVD btw

just got this delivered to my house last night and ran through the first two discs, im just at the point where savage and elizabeth got married and hes doin a programme with jake the sanke.

entertaining stuff but one of the things that pissed me off was what the hell have striker and maria got to do with anything and why are they hosting the dvd: like why not get mene gene or somebody from that genre??

anybody else notice that a good portion of all of savages matches take place outside the ring??

got to see one of my fav matches ever that i already mentioned earlier in this thread, that being warrior v savage in the retirement match at wrestlemania....quality match and serious crowd reaction.

dont know much about savages work in wcw as i was never a major viewer ( brand loyalty oh yes!) so lookin forward to that!

and another thing that i got from the dvd was a reminder just how influential elizabeth was, and how she could be used in class storylines, fcuk luger anyway!!!!

They had CP Munk and Beth Phoenix do the greatest stars of the 90s one! That was a joke too, seeing as both were still in nappies most likely.

Wouldn't go that far, he had a few outside the ring spots that were regulars (Axe handle, flying over the rope draping opponents throat over the top rope, etc)

Prepare to be disappointed, there isn't much of his WCW work there, and there isn't for a reason. It wasn't that great.

Too be fair, Liz having an addiction to pain pills isn't Lugers fault. Savage pretty much said the same.

I have to agree with an earlier poster in that a lot of the more recent WWE dvd's are not so good. My favourite dvd is still the Monday Night Wars.

I thought that was terrible. It was a great idea, but so horribly one sided that it sapped all the interest. I've barely watched it since i got it.

Don't worry, I've watched it more than enough times to make up for all the times you haven't watched it

I hear they are bringing out a Rise and Fall of WCW dvd. Not sure when it's due out though.

I'm not going to get the Macho Man DVD. He was definitely one of the main characters back in the 80's and stuff but I much prefer the DVD's they release where they do a nice long 1 and a half to 2 hour interview and add some matches too. The DVD's where they have about 30 seconds of chat then straight into a match don't really interest me so much.

I really hope a rise and fall of WCW really covers in detail it's problems, as well as WWE's admission to their f*ckups during that period of time.

Somehow i doubt that will happen.
