With it being such a topical debate among runners would be interesting to know what kinda mileage boardies clock a week? do they feel that is enough for their specific race distance and what they feel is an optimum mileage for training for each race distance from 5k up?

I checked back over my training log there and see that I was averaging 50 mile a week give or take for my marathon training for Rotterdam. I was nearer 45 miles per week average for Edinburgh and I got a PB there, so maybe lower, more targetted mileage, suits me.

Interesting i train for the lower range of events such as 5k 10k and at moment this week i clocked roughly 55 i find that more miles i put in the better i am able to cope with maintaining higher speeds. also managed to improve my 8 and 15 times narrowly with mileage despite not doing too muc speed work

I would say my build up for Paris averaged at 50 per week with a high of 62, currently aveagine 40 for this marathon build up but I'm hoping to get the average up to about 60, have to stop being lazy.

I do 40 mpw training for shorter stuff. I'd like to do more but it wouldnt be ideal to increase mileage now with the workouts Im doing. Ill take a week off at the end of summer and then gradually build up to 60 mpw over the winter (I hope;)).

Some day Id like to be able to handle 80mpw. I think the ideal amount would be around 100mpw but I dont think I would ever be able to handle that.

Big numbers, very easy to say on a message boadr, Im sure its another thing doing them on the road:D

Did 35 mpw this week, increased over last 6 weeks from 20. I'm hoping to get up to about 40-45 for the Dublin marathon this year. I don't think I can manage any more than that time wise. Hoping it's enough to get my target time of 3:30 ...

My average for the year 35mls per week - but some forced days off. Ignoring those it's closer to 40, with some peaks of 50.
I definitley feel I need to be close to 40 for an average of 4 weeks, I think it's a combination of mental and physical.
The strongest race I've ran this year came of the back of 22 days uninterupted (151mls) with a day off before the race, felt strong throughout on an 18:54 5k - with a last k of 3:34 :D

Ecoli, what are you training for?

I'm currently between 25 and 35 miles per week but want to get that up to 60 for Dublin as it's my first marathon and I want to finish sub 3:30. :D

20-30 miles a week at the moment, training for a half (which is 2 weeks away), hoping to step that up a bit over the summer in training for Dublin (aiming (1) to finish, (2) to finish in 4:30).

In the weeks that I have actually been running so far this year I've only been clocking up about 25miles a week, but I've not been training for anything specific despite the number of races I've been doing.

I was running 15-20 miles per week for 1500 / 3k but found this was not enough of a base to cope with 2 quality sessions plus a long run a week - I've now acquired a niggly injury so am at zero miles per week for the moment. Once I get back into it will be doing more "filler miles" and aim for 1 or 2 easy runs each week. although I find them a necessary evil.

As in my goal race? well I am looking to have a successful XC season hopefully top 15 in Dublin Novices though dunno how realistic that is at the moment but we shall see

For marathon training, it's 50 miles a week maximum for me - any more than that and the constant niggles turn into proper injuries.

I used to only train four days a week, and ran a 3:09 marathon on 35 miles a week. A year later I was running 6 days and 60 miles a week, but got injured and ran a 3:40 marathon, so now I'm trying to balance decent mileage with staying uninjured. For me it's quality, not quantity that seems to work.

My standard week - ie not racing or recovering from racing - would be around 55 miles. It's probably the right amount for me. Anymore and I'd get bored or feel like running was taking over my life! Training for 3000m at the moment and then the XC season afterwards.

What kinda times do you have would be interested to see as kinda same aims with the same mileage?

Hoping to run close to 9.20 this summer - I'll have a better idea of where I stand with that goal next week. My current 5k time is around 16.20 and I'd like to take a chunk off that as well.

its interest to see a correlation between mileage and similar 5k PB s possibly if i had managed to run a 3k (fit) in the last two years might also be evident in three k times

50miles a week nearly all year round, its quailty over quanity for me lads.

This XC season hoping to bring that to 60, plus two workouts a week(munich hills)

At the min with racing im just getting around 40...

Personally I've found that if your naturally a bit faster you need to build up the miles to improve and hopefully stay injury free.
