David Moxon subjected 40 men and women to the sounds of a Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferrari, then measured the amount of testosterone in their saliva. He found everyone had higher levels of the stuff — a measure of their arousal — after hearing the revving exotics, but the amount the women had was off the charts.

    Source: http://www.wired.com/autopia/2008/09/weve-got-some-b/

Why do some women like lads that drive sexy looking cars? OK, some will say the answer is obvious, while others will proclaim that the lad's personality, integrity, humour, thoughtfulness, and physical fitness are more important than material things?

As for me, I would never be influenced by a lad that drove a B!ue fully restored 1966 rag-top XKE Jag like this one... (Bad B!ue groans...but I want to drive!).

That car is shaped like a penis

    Mystery solved.

I'm sorry, but if my equipment were shaped like an E-Type, I'd be seriously disconcerted. (Now, if it were shaped like a Rheinmetall 120mm smoothbore cannon... no, wait. That would be bad too...)

Believe it or not, I don't actually buy my cars on the basis of attracting women. If the woman doesn't appreciate the qualities of the car, well, her loss. I buy my toys for me!

I've never been into cars, not even since I started driving. My cousin used to collect model cars and there was one that always stood out to me, Lamborghini, it was just the way it was shaped and the look of it. A few years passed and then one day as I went into do some carving, my friend showed me a magazine with the new LP640 model:
    image_40283_largeimagefile.jpg

I wanted it badly, every time I got in my little fiesta I imagined driving a Lamborghini. No other car ever got me the same way, a Ferrari, Veyron, all these fancy cars, sure they were nice to look at but they were all just cars, cars that like any other car, I never had interest in. The Lamborghini is different though, I don't know why. I still want one, and my interest in cars is so minimal, that I could actually see myself just driving the van until I've saved up for a Lamborghini and not prolong the waiting by spending money on other cars in between. I'm not really materialistic at all so it's a strange one.:o

I wouldn't want to be thought of as somebody who bought it just because they had the money to and wanted to show off as there's something more than that. It's a strange situation. If anyone wants to donate to the get cormie a Lamborghini fund, do let me know :P

    Because they're dumb and shallow?

A high revving engine sounds dangerous and exciting. Both turn ons in men and women. I've read about studies before that showed women get turned on more than men emotionally and sexually by danger and will attach more to the man they share that with. So women on dates who see horror movies were more turned on than women who watched romcoms. I'd reckon it would be the same with cars. Throw in the status aspect and you're on a winner. It doesn't mention if the people were told what car they were listening to. If it was a blind test then that lends more to the idea that its the dangerous noise itself maybe.

The best engine note I've heard was a 1960's Ferrari(Think it was an GTO) running a hillclimb race. Oh. My. God. Pure mechanical symphony. Can't find it on the web though.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

40 men and women to the sounds of a Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferrari,

There is some critical information missing, here. For example, did he tell them that they were listening to high-performance engines? Those cars will have an entirely different engine note to, say, a big American V8, which can sound just as wonderful in its own way, even if it's in a boring and unsexy Pontiac GTO body. Or even the simple Alfa Romeo 6-banger, which had its own melodious note whilst being on a very non-exotic car. Did he even play non-exotic engines? What if he played the engine note off my Chevy V6, would they have the same result of testosterone increase as off my Audi V8? Can the average person off the street tell the difference between the various types?

To quote family guy "You look like rappers, but your white, so that's just the right amount of danger."

In my experience, even women who claim to like dangerous men really want "implied danger but actually safe men". The car implies speed, success, some risk etc...but also dedication and effort.

So it's the safe cop out. The guy has stuff, and the girl likes that. It's about that simple i think.

With regards to the actual sound test, go back far enough and any woman here would be looking for a man who could scream and shout the loudest as part of his mating rituals, I keep saying this but i will again, we are not that removed from our previous evolutionary stage.

Eh.... Sometimes I look at a car and really really like it, it doesn't mean I want the guy driving it, it means I want the car.

Women drive cars too you know.

Indeed. I don't think i implied anywhere that the only reason a woman can like a car is because she would have an interest in the man driving it.

I thought the thread was about women who like men because of cars?

:o Oh sometimes there is. There really is. On autobahns and the like of course....

I know it sounds daft, but every time I hear a car revving hard(even a mundane car) I'm impressed. I hear the symphony of explosions contained to give power. Even the Micra that gets the 90 year old to shops is an amazing thing. But when you hear an engine taken to the degree the Italians and the Japanese and the Germans do, it's just that feeling multiplied.

I know a few women with the same madness too.

Now if someone can get the sound of a Merlin engine into a car, I'd live in the damn thing.:D
That doesn't do it justice. I saw and heard a Spitfire going back to the UK after an airshow going down a valley in the Wicklow mountains at 16. It's a sound you feel. I wanted to shout "hey get back here I wanna put wheels on that thing". :D

*off topic* What I love about Italian culture is that they can employ equal aplomb for both the tackiest thing and the most high brow thing without missing a gear. Sometimes both at the same time. Helluva trick *off topic*

*on topic* they have made some truly amazing works of art with cars in noise and sight.

I think this is pure pornography, alpha romeo has to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever set my eyes on full stop, seeing some of these cars beauty would literally make me weep. There is no better sound than one of these masterpieces driving through a tunnel. It's what makes life worth living. You can not put a price on that or explain it to people, it is something you feel at the very depths of your soul.

I'd actually love to drive these cars myself. I'm partial to the Lotus Elise, Aston DB9 and Jag xk8. But having said I like a guy to be able to drive and if he's driving a nice car, even better. I actually find it a total turn-off if a guy can't drive well. :o I don't know why!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,256 ✭✭✭metaoblivia

I love classic cars, but generally not the men driving them (because they're way too old for me!). Newer cars don't do much for me, even the nice ones. Although, when I was in kindergarten, our teacher asked us to name our favorite mode of transportation. Everyone gave the staple answers - truck, car, aeroplane. Then she got to me and I answered Lamborghini. My parents got a call for that one. So much for good taste.
So for me, the classic car would be the turn on, and then if you removed the old guy driving it, even better.

I find men who drive polos (the new model and preferably black) really hot.

I really dont know why. I dont even like polos. I'd never buy one myself. I'm completely flummoxed by this strange attraction.

I think I'd find one of those big fancy cars a turn off, if anything. But I wouldnt mind driving one myself. Some classic cars like the old jags are gorgeous though. I like classic vw campers too.

This is the most recent version of the Goat. It's basically a Holden Monaro rebadged as a Pontiac. Nothing wrong with that per se, the thing goes like stink thanks to the 6.2l V8, but you have to admit, it does look a little unpreposessing.

...and deadly. It suffered a slight flaw that, given it was shaped vaguely like an aeroplane's wing, it tended to take off at higher speeds. Steering became more an issue of prayer than of turning the wheel.

Apologies for the delay in this one, I'm only just back home on leave, but I thought I'd try an experiment. I happen to have two cars in the driveway, one a little more interesting than the other, so I revved them up a bit.
