Clerks has always been one of my favourite films, it was one of the first films i got my wife to watch as a way of getting her to understand the kind of films i liked.

When i bought it on DVD to get her to watch it about 3 years ago, i picked up the 3 disc tenth anniversary edition.

Now to be honest i dont normally watch special features or commentaries in DVD's, just simply because i like the movie to be what i interperet it to be and leave it at that.

Tonight however i put on the 2nd disc which contains the "first cut" of the movie.

I thought i knew this movie inside out, it always cheered me up, its probably one of the films ive watched the most times in my life.
But now things are completely different.

has anyone elsed watched the version im talking about? I dont want to spoiler it because i know personally i cant resist highlighting spoiler tags :o.

But if anyone has seen it....what did they think? Was the change for better or for worse?

    Thanks for that fantastic input.

I cant be arsed getting into a debate of why i personally find the film funny and well written...at least a little better than your post anyway.

So the original question still stands for anyone who has seen both versions (wether they like it or not) were the changes made for the Theatrical release for the better?

yup, seen it & I think it's a better move (irony of "I'm not supposed to be here today"), but... hollywood ending & all that...

See thats the thing, normally i would agree with what your saying.

But for me Clerks has always been a "feelgood" kind of film, they have their fight, sort it out, life goes on...its still ****, but it goes on.

Now though, its not a feelgood movie and i almost feel like ive been a little cheated out of a film ive loved for the 12-13 years since i first saw it.

Eirebear just ignore duckysauce, an obvious troll if ever there was one.

Big fan of Clerks, watched all 3 discs of the DVD when I first got it and loved every minute. I do feel that after watchign the original cut so many times that the original cut is a bit of a downer. You grow so attached to the characters over the run time that seeing such a random act rob you of one is a bit of a cop out. Sure it's a more emotional ending but when you consider what went before it feels a little out of place. The irony is quite good but at the end of the day Clerks is a film you wan't to watch with a smile.

    On topic.

Ive watched Clerks a couple of times and am still not able to get into it.

I dunno what it is but it does nothing for me.

Clerks 2 on the other hand,I found it (more or less) frickin awesome.

Much prefer the released version over the original. Much more of a rounded ending and left the door open for the characters to reappear like they have in some shape or form in the View Askew Universe. Really enjoyed the documentry part of the special edition aswell.

I've seen the original and enjoyed/appreciated it, albeit mostly from a technical point of view.. the long-cut dialogue scenes were incredibly well done, but that's a trademark of Smith's films. It didn't really resonate with me, and I doubt I'll watch it again, but I did enjoy it while I watched it.

Can someone post up a spoiler tag of the differences between the release and the original?

its has to be judged in context, made for nothing after work, its great for that.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SUCK MY COCK? BESERKER!

Just about to sit down to watch this now, must be at least 2 years since I've seen it now but this thread reminded me of it and has me watching clips on youtube all day, now for the full thing.

If I remember right the original ending was:
Dante gets shot dead at the end

That is for those that didn't know.

It was a pointless add on that didn't really change the film because any fan of the film saw it 20 times without that ending therefore it didn't really happen. Nor did it change the story.

However if we were to leave that end in place we would not have gotten Clerks 2. A sacrifice I would be willing to make.

Thats the thing though, i have seen the film 20 times and more without the "original ending" but now i HAVE seen it, it changes the film completely for me.

Next time i decide to watch the version we all know and love, i wont feel quite as good about things as Randel walks out the door.

EDIT: Ive never watched Clerks 2...always felt it was safer not to!

I prefer Clerks but Clerks 2 is also v. funny. If we had the original ending Clerks 2 wouldn't have happened. Also a good documenty on the extras of Clerks 2. Tells of how Kevin Smith recoverd from Jersey Girl and came to writing Clerks 2.

Eirebear my hunny ;), I have noticed that you and I have a similar taste in film from reading these boards but regarding Clerks, I just don't rate it.

It's watchable, there are many funny parts and I even own a copy of it but I don't see why it is so highly rated by folk.

I DO get it, but just don't see the mad fuss over it.

Must watch that other version you have mentioned. Maybe that will give me more reason to like the overall concept. But I'm not banking on it.
