Passport Question

I have a question about the renewal of my passport and i'm not really sure where to ask or who can help me.

The problem is, i'm going to Canada in December for a year and i am hoping to stay on after that. I am hoping to extend my temporary visa by another year, but when i was reading about this visa extension it states that the extension can only be up until the expiry date of the passport.

My passport expires in August 2011. If i go to Canada in December 2009, stay a year and apply for an extension it will only allow me to extend until August rather than the full year. At this point i'm not sure what happens, i presume i can renew my passport and then try to extend my visa again, but i'm not sure about this.

What i'm thinking is, if i can get my new passport before i leave for canada this year, it will have a full 10 years on it and it won't affect any visa extension. But that is assuming that i can renew my passport around 2 years before it expires...

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to do this. I apologise for the lengthy post. I just want to make it clear why i'm looking to do this.

    Thanks

It should be possible. I last renewed my passport months ahead and htere wasn't a problem. Just explain you are planning to be away for a few years and would prefer to have the extended validity.

It is no problem to renew a passport at any time.
