Just bought a new bike for commuting to work. I've a big head and helmets feel and look massive on me. Has anyone any suggestions for a slim helmet for a big head?

By the way, i'm not looking for a telling-off. I have a helmet, i wear it and i'm NOT going to stop wearing it. i was just wondering if my head has any other options.

I have the same problem. You need to find a brand where you are on the top end of a given size.

My Bell makes me look like a UFO has landed on my head, comfortable though it is. I tried a Spiuk of some sort in size M/L the other day, and it looked better. The retention system didn't look as good as the Bell though.

I too am cranially challenged. I wear a Specialized Propero which makes my head look slightly smaller. If buying a new one, definitely consider doing it online from the UK: not only will the base price be cheaper but helmets are zero-rated for VAT in the UK (since they are treated as safety equipment).

Yeah, I have an odd shaped head. It was quite apparent in the photo with Sean Kelly that I am quite well endowed in the cranial department. I find Giro are the worst for exacerbating this condition.

Have you tried the Met make. they are very neat and may not look so bad with a big head. Cento are the wholesalers

I too have a noggin of pumpkin proportions. Had a Met helmet that looked like a huge pudding bowl for years and recently switched to a Bell Sweep.

Great helmet but my head still looks big.

I have a large head and I (sometimes) wear a white Limar 104.

I'm the one on the left of this pic in the bouyges telecome jersey with my glasses stuck in my helmet (which I don't remembre doing): http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=60586652&postcount=15

I had a bell helmet and it looked f---ing ridiculous. Can't remember which model it was.

Watch out as some UK retailers (such as Wiggle) do charge Irish VAT on helmets. They are correct to do this, although some smaller retailers may fall beneath the relevent limit to register for Irish VAT, in which case you should get the zero-rated price

Most of us think our helmets look way out of proportion. I too have a long cranium so need big helmet and having tried a few the Bell (Aquila) was best fit for me. Here on left and actually doesn't look too big on my big (long) head!:)
@ Dirkvoodoo Boasting again about being well endowed in the cranial department!!
@ petethedrummer Sorry didn't say hello on the day as was there when photo taken.
@rflynnr sent you a pm not sure if you got it

Beasty's quite right on this: CRC and Wiggle certainly seem to charge VAT. One to consider for a helmet though is FW Evans online, who - currently at least - don't seem to do enough business in the Republic to require them to apply Irish VAT rates. My Propero was €80 inc. p&p from them as opposed to €150 in my LBS.

I hear helmets with vertical stripes can make you head look slimmer :p

Slane Cycles don't charge VAT either. Good service too, free next day delivery on purchases over 100 sterling, otherwise think it's 3 quid.

On the large noggin theme, helmets always look bigger to you than to anyone else. I've yet to see anyone else's helmet that has made me chuckle or think how unfeasibly large it looks. I've never even really noticed the size of anyone else's helmet.

The limar looks neat, not sure about Bell helmets. I've already tried one on and it didn't loook the best. I would also be hesitant to buy off the internet, since I'd like to try it on first.

In my immaturity I giggled at the second paragraph.

+1 on Limar. I have a 909 size XL (58-62 cms) and it doesn't look like an XL when it's on my head.
I tried Giros and Bells before and their larger sizes made me look like that character in Mariokart with the mushroom head. I think they have a fairly round shape which makes the helmet seem larger. It's hard to find a decent selection of large sized helmets in most shops unfortunately. You do see quite a few people with helmets that are simply too small, with the front of the helmet behind the hairline.
