From The Dominion Post - http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/central-north-island/2496826/Jewel-thief-couple-jailed-for-two-years

Taxpayers will spend almost $365,000 keeping a pair of professional Romanian jewel thieves in prison.

Ioan Kvec, 48, and Paulina Kvec, 44, were each sentenced in Palmerston North District yesterday to two years' imprisonment on 11 charges of theft and one charge of attempted theft.

They arrived in New Zealand on February 13 and toured the North Island stealing $50,400 worth of jewellery, before being arrested near Bulls on February 22.

The pair also swindled banks out of $5000 by pocketing money during money exchanges.

"I'm satisfied that you travelled a considerable distance to commit offences that would not only provide you with profit but also offset the considerable travel expenses involved," Judge Les Atkins said.

The owner of Tauranga's Goldsmith Jewellery Design House, Debbie Morris, who had a $28,000 ring stolen from her store when the couple distracted the sales assistant, said the Kvecs were "bold as brass" and she was happy with the verdict. "They didn't scarper. They stayed behind, shook your hand, and said they would be back tomorrow to purchase."

Thirty-four pieces of jewellery, valued at $35,000, found in theKvecs' luggage at the time of their arrest is unclaimed.

The pieces are in police possession, but the Kvecs could lay claim to the jewels if they can prove they legally own them.

A Justice Ministry spokesman said the couple were tried in New Zealand because it was important for their victims to see justice done. Romanian courts were unlikely to have jurisdiction over the case.

The Corrections Department estimates it costs $248.62 a day to accommodate a prisoner. The Kvecs have already spent 111 days in custody and the sentence means they are not due to be freed until February 2011.

Now, there's been a lot of Ireland bashing threads in AH recently. Although I live abroad I've thought some of the comments about what a kip Ireland is were a bit over the top.

However, this article did get me thinking. These people flew to NZ and started stealing straight away. It took three weeks for them to be caught and now they have been jailed for two years and then will be deported. Do you think if this happened in Dublin that this would be the case? I'm quite impressed that the police here caught them so quickly.

People here are giving out that the NZ government will be paying to house them in prison for two years and that they should just be deported. What do you think? Personally I think they should serve the prison sentence, just to show others that if you come to a country with the intention of only taking from it then you should pay the price

p.s. just to clarify, this is not a Roma/Romanian thing - it just happened this couple are from Romania!

I am so angry right now that interpretive dance is the only way to adequately express it.

Sounds like a very ineffectually run prison if it costs that much per day. I'd be interested to see what the breakdown on costs on that is. I'd imagine a lot of made up bull**** is factored in.

Why does it cost so much to imprison someone?

Keeping someone in a well run prison while providing for their basic human rights costs a wee bit more than keeping them in cages in a human-zoo on an island just off the coast

How much does it cost in Ireland? 365,000NZD is approximately €167,000. That's about €83,000 each to house them for the two years so lets say €40,000ish a year. I would imagine that each inmate costs about that much in Ireland - or am I being naive and in Ireland we keep prisoners for a lot less?

Yes, we do tend to keep our prisoners for a lot less than a year.
