Broken chain link - need advice.

After taking the chain off the bike to degrease it and clean it etc I lost the spacer on one of the open links :( so had to remove that link and another one to rejoin the chain.
So now my chain is two links shorter than before and I'm wondering it it will cause problems?

The bike is a hybrid with 8-speed cassette.

Would replacing the missing link with something like a powerlink be an option?

You might have issues with getting into certain gears, mainly the two biggest, so 3 on the left and 1 on the right shifter.

Id replace it with a powerlink.

Is it a shimano chain because thats a problem with rejoining as they need a replacemnet pin.

Thanks, yes it's a Shimano. I presume the LBS would be able to provide a replacement pin.

Although after reading Sheldon Brown I think I'll just invest in a new chain. It seems a short chain can do quite a bit of damage.
If the chain is too short, it will be at risk for jamming and possibly ruining the rear derailer if you accidentally shift into the large-large combination. Never run with a chain that is too short, except in an emergency.

You might well be okay. Stick it onto the biggest ring at the front and see if you can get the chain up onto the biggest cog at the back (a gear you shouldn't normally use anyway). See if the rear derailleur looks like it is being pulled too far forwards.
Otherwise, you'll probably get away with using a powerlink. If the chain is old then maybe just get a new one anyway.
