It's a good course. They put in some new holes five or six years ago which improved the course a lot. Haven't played there lately so don't know what the greens are like but it's worth a trip.

No doubt about it: Portumna is a wonderful course. The setting is magnificent and it's a beautiful round of golf. Excellent value too.

Great place. have played it on about 10 occasions and enjoyed it everyone. Lots of class holes especially 1,3,5,6,10,12 and 17. Biggest let down though is 18. Par 3s to finish just dont do it for me imo:o

I've played it 2 or 3 times and it wouldn't be my favorite, still a nice course though.

Its a nice course but the standard of the greens is terrible. Still worth the money though

Sometimes their greens are not up to standard but the course is terrific. Some of the holes are for big hitters, particularly on the front nine. 17th a class hole. Agree with previous poster about finishing on a par 3, equally I hate starting on one. The setting in Portumna is truly idyllic and great value as well

Greens were in great condition when I played it last year.

If there are any greenkeepers on this forum, would love to hear how they decide when to pole-fork greens and treat them. It seems to make all the difference and all depends on the luck of the weather.

As for ending on a par three - I agree it's not the best way to finish, but in yesterday's Irish Times, Philip Reid gives the par three 18th at Killarney's Mahony's Point, the runner-up spot in his top 18 parkland holes (behind Adare).

Played it Friday in open Stroke competition. First time playing it in 12 or so years changes they made are fantastic. Long par 3's and 17th is a great par 5. Worth the play and for €15 for open singles on Mondays I'll be back before the end of August.

Just played Portumna this morning. I have to say its a fantastic course. Not one poor hole on it in my opinion. Some fantastic holes and a wonderful setting. Great condition for this time of year also.

Its a real test too, very long. I'd imagine in the summer the place looks fantastic. The best course I've played in the Midland region.

It's a fantastic course and definitely one you have to play. Some great holes. It's long and tough, but fair. 2 absolutely cracking par 5's are the 6th and 17th. It has always been a great course but they made a some changes a few years ago and it's even better now. You couldn't but like that course.

Just under 7000 yards according to their website, fairly long alright.Wouldn't mind giving it a go.Don't want to Hijack, but since they're relatively close to each other.. anyone familiar with Birr?Heard something about a membership deal for under 600.

I caddied for a match in Birr and I remember it needed a buldozer to flatter some hills and make some room... that could have been done since.

I think there's been some work there recently alright, could have been exactly that.

Hi Scrubber. The greens are all in pretty good nick for this time of year. No problems there. We got out at about 11 but I'm sure we'd have got out a bit earlier if we wanted. That was after we had to abandon playing the heritage as it was closed.

I really can't say enough about Portumna. A hidden Gem.

Yeah they added 4 new holes I think so Birr has a lot more room and is all the better for it. Still a few holes where your hitting across a white stone but that adds to its appeal for me. I love holes with a change in elevation. As Birr is built on an esker I think thats part of its character. Another good course. Tough too.

I didn't mind the white stones so much, it was getting hit by the white ball that concerned me :) Just a few of the holes were tight for space so great if they've been able to sort that out a bit. Would have liked to play it from what I saw anyway a few years ago.

A friend of mine is a member so played it for the first time last summer.

Very impressed - one of a number of great rural courses that have great settings and a friendly welcome.

It is set in a very impressive location and makes best use of the location with some great golf holes.

Ordinarily would agree that a par 3 isn't great to finish on but I happen to think it's a great par 3 (after just playing the superb par 5 17th).

    Go enjoy!
