Range finder

    Guys,

I have been having problems finding accurate distance on my new clubs. I had tried the open driving range but its a little inaccurate in terms of using the long irons and woods.

So i decided to head down to a golf stimulator in the south dublin region. When i started, the pro told me to use the tee for all shots as the machine/radar reads the swing/ball speed etc better. This wasnt what i had in mind for 7-PW shot, nevertheless i carried on. Big mistake...poor reading and the machine had problems reading it. Tried using the driver but the rubber tee was too low. i had asked the pro about a taller tee so i can hit my driver just above the centre of the clubface...no go...the rubber tee as it is (ideal for a 5 wood) is far as it goes.

At the end, i didnt feel i got as much accurate info as i needed. The pro kept harping on about how accuarate it is, so i told him that i hit a 6 iron (smooth swing and sweet contact) and landed 127 yards on the screen and i normally hit 165-180 with a 6 iron on the course. His reply was " Are you sure you hit it well, the stimulator never lies".

How about that for customer service?????

yeah I feel the same way about the simulators

You cannot go wrong with a range finder, buy a decent one and they are extremely accurate. I just purchased a skycassie gps sg5 and this is very accurate also, lets me know how far I drive and hit every iron

its the way forward in my opinion

I went directly to my pro at my club and it cost me 350 , there is cheaper versions and I know I could have got it directly off web for about 320 but thought it would be best to support my pro as he looks after me.

My main purpose of this was a few things. Firstly get consistant distances off all my clubs so I know without thinking my club needed for the shot, It also points out your yardage to front, middle, back of green. Tells you how far to carry the bunkers, streams hazards and most of all its a gadget and I just love em

eh, when you say skycassie I am assuming you are saying skycaddie
Where can you get the sg5 online for 320?

    cheers,
For some reason I thought the skycaddie sg5 was about €500. €300 much more reasonable. Think I might pick up one of these next week.
    I'm a gadget freak so it's a natural progression :D

:eek:Just checked it out on amazon...Reasonable price 320.

So bascially i take my tee shot, ball land in the fairway and i look into this skycaddie and it indicate the range of where the ball lands.Amazing, never seen anything like this before.
Have seen something like a gps where players just stick it on the trolley and it calulates the distance from tee shot to where the ball lands.:pac:

    yeah they are savage
I looked at them all, you have to pay an annual subscription for this one and need to download the course you want and it only holds 10 courses at a time.

for 420 you can buy a golf buddy and you never have to pay any subscription and no need for download but it just didnt look as user friendly

The new sg5 also has a digital card marker which it never used to have, its a must have gadget

It has a marker button you hit when you leave the tee box, when you get to your ball you hit it again and it tells you how far the drive went, more importantly it tells you accurately how far you have to front ,middle and back of green

Whats the story with downloading courses then Buachaill? What does it cost to download each course? Is every course available to be downloaded? Also how much is the annual subscription?
Sorry for all the questions but I just love them gadgets too!! But I really want to find out far I actually hit my irons and take a bit of the guesswork out of it.

there are a few packages cheapest is the birdie package which is 30 dollars that gives you courses in ireland, not all of the clubs have it mapped but most have. then you have the eagle package which i took out 60 dollars and gives me ireland and all of europe. all the packages last 12 months and you can download as many courses as you like in that time that they have on their site. its very easy to use and set up took me about 5 mins

    Hope this helps

Hypothetical but.. can you download as many course as you like to your PC during the course of a year (I know the unit itself will only hold 10 at a time), then avoid the 2nd year renewal and still be able to synch the courses you have downloaded already? I take it you download from web-to pc-to unit

afraid not , you must hook your unit directly into your pc when you are downloading the course, however I do like your thinking and if you come up with the solution please let us know

I bought a Caddy Lite from GPS.ie. It comes with a practice facility which allows you to measure your distances with each club. Haven't used it yet, but apparently (from the instructions) you hit the ball, select "practice" and walk to the ball as it lies. The GPS will tell you how far you have hit the ball. Its handy for me as a clubmaker as I can tell the client how far they hit with their own, and then my own equipment for comparison.
At least this will be the most accurate method of measuring your ball distances. I think it was 130 Euro delivered, with a free map credit for 1 Course. But the practice facility is the bonus.
Bad form from the guy with the simulator treating you like that. Too many lads like that these days.
