Wig-wam headlights - do they make driving at night tougher?

Wig-wam headlights - do they make driving at night tougher?
The reason i ask is this. Last weekend in Wexford, i was driving home on a dark, unlit road on the way from a night out (i was drinking orange beofre anyone suggests otherwise ;)) I notice, a bit down the road behind me was a Garda car on blues.
Now, he did have his wig-wam headlights on too, and when he overtook me, there was very little lighting on the road. I asked myself this question that night, and even dimmed my headlights as an experiment to see how hard it is to drive on an unlit road with no full beams.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Feel free to move to a different forumif you feel the need.

Not recommended tbh. Alternating headlights are designed for night mostly. The problem with AGS is that when you switch them on its your full lights that alternate (as they should) but for some reason the dips turn off.

Great for day time, a must in fact. But not the best idea at night.

I find that by winking alternately left and right, I can co-ordinate with the headlights so I have a constant, well lit field of vision while managing to disorientate the "perp" (as us cops would say).

They can't teach you this stuff. My university was the street.

Depends on the model lights you have. In most cases if the normal driving lights are turned on at night time and you turn on the headlight flashing system; the head lights will flash alternatley but the ordinary beam will stay on too. If you have your headlights on they should not flash. Thats how the "Hazzard" brand works and its about 10 years old.
No point in having flashing lights so that other people can see you if it interfers with your driving vision.

Edit - I think the Normal Beam Lights and High Beam Lights have to be on a seperate circuit for the above to work. The above system is on a Ford

My understanding was you didnt use flashing headlights at night.

It seriously interferes with the ability of your lights to adequately light the road

Usually the Blues will do once its dark. However if you hit '999' all lights come on, including the wig-wags. So, it's a bit of an effort unnecessary time waste to start hitting all the buttons. :D

    By the way. It's Wig-Wags. Last time I checked a wig-wam was a tent. :D

Just to add O/P the alternating headlights only come on if the light switch is off. As in if you have your lights switched on and hit 999 only blues come on.

    Was gonna say this.
On the mondeos for example, the dipped headlights are always on, even when turned off on the dash. If the headlights are switched on properly, the headlamp flash doesnt work

Same with the ambulances since 01 when the carnation system was used. However since 2006 with the new WAS vehicles, if you just turn on your parking lights you still can use the wig wag flashing lights at night. I find it great for running calls in the city, you don't have to use the siren as much. However when I go out of the city, I revert back to normal dipped/full headlights. Another unique feature of the WAS vehicle is that if you turn on your front foglights & parking lights, the wig wag won't alternate the flash pattern but activates both at the same time.

Some ambulances/fire engines out there do have headlights that alternate from dipped to full lights even at night.

Just looks like the headlights are pulsating!
