Career change or just a career

    Hi all
I'm a guy in my early 30s and like alot of people out there I'm unemployed. I'm pretty cool with it if I'm honest though, as i hate working so it turns out that this recession thingamajig has worked out sweet for me. I have always been told I'm funny. I know physically that i look funny, so maybe I've built up a sex mechanism down through the years to help me get laid. Well the wheels are a little rusty these days as are my balls and seeing as i have no prospects in getting a job, i really really want to try and become a proper stand up comedian. Am i mad? Yes a little but very serious. Can anyone help me get a head start or even a elbow start i don't mind as long as i can get some advice and some experience . Ill travel anywhere as long as i don't have to travel. All kidding aside id like some help, if anyone can.
    Kind regards
    Lebron King James the first.

Can give you a response... if that's any help...

Funny is as funny does, not as funny wants t' be, as Mark Twain once said, over coffee & biscotti, in the old Bewley's...

Then again, as I replied; Twain, your stand-up sucks billy-goats...

You won't know til you try. But sure ask any comedian these days how they pay for their food, rent and anything else.... I highly doubt it's by comedy gigs alone.

John Bishop went from pharmaceutical salesman to comedian in a few months by complete accident(great show where he tells his story by the way) and he got his inspiration from a bloke who sold wheels for dogs, imagine how he felt when he told his wife "im goin to start selling wheels for dogs" sounds much sillier than "im going to be a comdian dear".....so give it a shot id love to do it myself but dont have the balls!

I don't know what you call them in the trade but i thought there would be slots before established artists came on for newbies. My bad if there is not. I'm working on material as we speak and id really really honestly love to give it a bash.

Gives one plenty of time to work on a set! Actually, thats not even that long a waiting list compared to some other clubs. Plus the intervening time can be spent going in regularly to check out what you'd be up against. It'll help shape your delivery for your first gig.

Oh right, sorry I didn't know what you were on about. I'm not up on all the comedy lingo myself. I'm not a comedian, I'm a musician. :p

I'm getting ready to do my first live stan up too and did the Aidan Killian workshop. He runs a comedy night on Wednesdays in Anseo on Camden st. If I remember correctly he's doing a free workshop on Wednesday 24th June. Here's his website http://www.aidankillian.com/the-course/ Drop him a line, he's a great guy.

No probs brother, i'm a singer in a band myself . THE SENTEMENTILISTS, we are not that well known(mainly it cause we just play in my buddies garage and we are not that good and there is just two of us and im not real good at remembering lyrics and his wife just had a baby so now we dont even practice anymore). To be honest i dont even know why we gave ourselves a name in the first place.Although i was thinking of using a guitar as a part of my act just an idea.

Cheers, Robbie i actually got you mixed up with another poster who gave me details on a comedy course. Im back in Ireland the middle of next month after a extended break away from all the doom and gloom and believe me il be getting my 5hit together real quick. Is there any other clubs around the country that you or anyone else know that i can ring up and book a section. thanks again.
