Women with big feet

Hi. My name is Christine and I wear a size 9.

I am fed the FECK up.

    Seriously.

New Look sell size 9, but you have to shop online (at least, in Galway)
Evans sell size 9, but their store in Galway is closing. And they never had anything nice anyway, plus most of them were "wide width" which I don't need
You find the odd pair from Clarks or Gabor for 90 frickin' euro in posh stores, they're always plain and/or hideous.

What I really want is for Penney's, Dunnes, etc. to start stocking 9s, maybe even 10s. So how many women here have bigger feet? If we can get a few women together to put their names to a letter to send out to the retailers... well it's better than doing nothing. I'm so mad. (seriously. really cute pair of flats in penney's. so sad :( )

I find an 8 bad enough. I've certainly got a lot of "sorry we don't do those in size 8, want to try a 7?" er, no
Or missing out on all the sale racks because they're ALWAYS for size 4-5.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,698 Mod ✭✭✭✭Silverfish

I've a size 3 foot. All I get is '..oh sorry ... the smallest size in that style is a 5..'

    emot-argh.gif

I feel your 'I can't get shoes in my size' rage.

EDIT: oh actually, try http://www.duoboots.com/. Sometimes they come up good.

Barratts and Faith do a size 9 afaik. I am a 7.5 - 8 so luckily I generally fit the largest size in the shop. It is becoming far more common for ladies to have large feet and shops need to accommodate for this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,150 ✭✭✭LivingDeadGirl

Well I'm a 6 and my size is always gone in whatever kind of shoe I want!

Agreed. I know more girls who would be size 8-9 than would be size 3-4, yet the ones with smaller feet find it much easier to find shoes.

Thankfully, I'm a 7 - best of both worlds really, can always get my size and usually there's something left in my size in the sale. :)

My feet are a size 8 and it's a nightmare for me too!

The most annoying part is when you go to a shop and ask for a shoe in an 8 and they come back with a 7 or even a frikkin 6 asking if you wanna try it on.
I mean if i was a size 7 i'd ask for one. They always do it in schuh.... drives me crazy!

I hear you sister, size 8 1/2 wide here and it's been a bloody bane.
It is getting better slowly but there is only so many times you can take a sales assistant telling you "Ladies sizes only go up to a size 7."

I have size 7 very narrow feet - is OK in terms of being able to get shoes (except for the narrow bit) but I am about 5ft 2in in height...trying to even get this size in Portugal where we go the odd time is a nightmare, they assume that I am referring to mens shoes!

Ecco do a nice range that goes up to 9 (not sure if they have a Galway branch).

Ecco are quite expensive, though. They'd be like Clarks and Gabor, really.

    Soweee! They are pricey, yes....
Make that a shocking price- but they are incredibly comfy.

I think that they also have a reputation for being "conservative" and have a lot of flat shoes - however they are unbelievably comfortable. Most of my shoes are from there - have two gorgeous pairs of sandles that I am ashamed to say cost 85 Eur per pair! I just buy less shoes...

I don't get how ecco are supposed to be good comfy shoes, anytime I've had a pair they've literally torn my feet til I was limping

I'm a size 6/7 but I am absolutely squished into the 8s in Dunnes and Penneys...I'd be all for them offering larger sizes overall, and I think there's lots of money in it for the retailers if they offered sizes 8 and up.

I think that it just depends on different people - I need flat, light shoes with decent support and need to be well strapped in, most other brands are very uncomfortable for me.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 32,286 Mod ✭✭✭✭The_Conductor

My wife and I have a particular shoe shop we visit once a year- it stocks various continental brands (such as Fluchos) which do go up to reasonable sizes and are very comfortable and smart (ok- read shoes to wear as part of a dress suit- rather than out with your mates- but you know what I mean).

Is there a branch of 'Office' in Galway? There are a few around Dublin- if you're down in Dublin- the one on Grafton Street has larger women's shoes- something for every taste (and budget).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 437 ✭✭mimihops

Size 9 here too although sometimes I can get 8's in some brands...if i squish my feet enough!! I totally understand your frustration, its so annoying. I love shoes but find it hard to get nice ones too. I know they are expensive but Irregular Choice have started making shoes in a 9 now and its a generous 9 as well so thats good. Barretts make a 9 but its too small for me!! Camper shoes do large sizes as well if your ever in Dublin but again very expensive. I definitely think more main stream shoe lines should go up to at least size 9 in fairness, I think there would be demand for it. The whole being brought a size 6 or 7 does my head in too and especially when they say oooh I'm sure your feet aren't THAT big, surely the 7 would do. Eh no. Unfortunately! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,085 ✭✭✭Xiney

See, I didn't know that about irregular choice. interesting.......

(expensive though, yes... but I'd rather spend that kind of money on something nice you know?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,691 ✭✭✭Lia_lia

Yeah, I have a few friends who are a size nine. They usually get shoes online. My boyfriend is a size 15  And his little sister who is only like 9 or 10 years old is a size 8.
I am a size 5 1/2. Small for my height. But NOWHERE seems to stock half sizes. So it's usually a size 6 that's a good bit too big for me.

Bearing in mind I am only a size 7 I find it hillarious that the best shoes that I ever got were only 29 Eur in Portugal and were childrens shoes! I even wore one pair to my wedding...you have to keep on looking. I keep on going back every year hoping to find them again but to no avail :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 437 ✭✭mimihops

But shoes are something nice Xiney lol!! Its probably actually a good thing most shoes aren't made in my size or I'd be broke as I just love shoes!! I know what you mean though, it would be nice to have variety and some good value shoes for just everyday wear and stuff like that. I've bought shoes online but its hit and miss, they really are something you would need to try on before buying.

I've got foot envy now. I'm only a size 8(they've grown in the last 5 years they used to be 7). You lot sniggering in the back? Ban hammer.... ;):D

On topic, I had an ex with size 9 and she went online like some have suggested. Bit of a crap shoot if you werent sure precisely what you wanted though.

no I meant, if I was going to spend 90 euro on a pair of shoes, I'd rather spend that on something from irregular choice than some boring pair from clarks or the like.

  • I'm always surprised at how many shops don't stock bigger than 7. I'm a size 7 and I'm on the shorter side of average, surely in a country where it is normal for women to be 5'8+, they should stock plenty of 8's and 9's? I always feel like I'm being judged if I have to ask for an 8 - once in Schuh they told me to look upstairs in the men's section! I think they really need to reconsider peoples' needs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,420 ✭✭✭Lollipops23

i'm a big 8(as in, loads of size 8s don't fit) and have very narrow feet-my toes looks like small fingers!thing is,my fave shoes are Converse which make my feet look even longer and thinner!!!for some reason a really can't cope with high-heels either; no matter how low the heel is or how well their made, my feet are tortures!don't know if it's anything to do with their size though:p

I saw a TV programme years back where this anthropology type was saying that the shape of feet said a lot about your ancestry. This woman who studied same could take one look at your feet and spot where you were from. IIRC Apparently long narrow feet are very celtic and square wide feet are more anglo saxon/viking. There are people who study this it seems.:)

I'm a size 9. I can squeeze into a size 8 if it's very generous or if I'm very determined, as long as it's flat. A few years ago it used to be much easier to get shoes, but the manufacturers seem to have regressed again.

I have wide feet, thanks to wearing mens shoes for years. I was warned that it would happen, but there was no alternative, and I'm damned annoyed.

My best bargain pair of shoes that don't rub the skin off my feet were €35 in Evans, and they're rubbish - pretty, but rubbish. They're falling apart, and I can't find anything wearable to replace them with.

I wear a pair of men's slip on DM shoes, or a pair of Clarkes mens casual shoes most of the time, simply because they fit. And I'm fed up.

My only decent pair of heels - two inch heel, sling back, red leather - were from a shoe boutique, they're a size 43, and they cost me €155, which I thought was obscene for a pair of shoes I will only wear a few times. To date, I've worn them 8 times - in approximately 14 months.

Even Clarkes are rubbish, not every store stocks the bigger sizes, and you can't buy from their website to Ireland.

    Grrr...

Usually no problem in the likes of M & S, but in other high street shops (Office, Schuh, Zerep, River Island, even Clarkes) you get "oh, we only got in one pair that size and it sold weeks ago.

I used to be a size 6 but my feet went up a size after I had my first kid. Same with my sister and best friend so I am a 7 now.

So girls dont have kids if you want nice shoes..;)

I had the very same treatment in Schuh on O'Connell Street. It was said in such a rude manner; "Men's shoes are upstairs!" So now I buy my Vans etc. in TK Maxx for a third of the price :)

Xiney, now I think of it, TX Maxx have such a huge variety of shoes, you might find something you like there.

Never found anything bigger than an 8 in TK Maxx I'm afraid.

And there isn't one in Galway right now anyway - although I hear it's coming soon! (They have the best handbags so yay!)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 71 ✭✭Doghouse

Size 8/9 here too. Have to say it's got a bit easier to get shoes in this size in the last few years - I've had the same size feet since I was 12 (nearly 20 years now!) and back then the choice was pretty much men's shoes or custom made, men's shoes being useless for me cos I've a very narrow foot. I agree that it's ridiculous that shops don't stock more 8s and 9s. There seems to be lots of women with these sizes and yet the shops might get in one or two pairs in a 42, if any. Grrr.

TK Maxx used to have some size 9 women's shoes, but they're virtually non-existant these days.

    It's a disgrace.

Thing is, shoe size isn't something we can really change. You can't put your feet on a diet.

So it sucks that much more when you can't find anything in your size.

At least with runners you can just wear a man's shoe
I got a pair once - lovely and black, and no worries about size. I should probably do that again.
All the women's runners in the shop were glaring white and usually with glitter or pink or some rubbish on them. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,085 ✭✭✭Xiney

Himself is an 8 too; men's size 8 is bigger though as far as I can make out!!

I was a size 8.5 at one stage, shrunk back to a 6.5/40 at around 16 though. Consider myself lucky; my mother is a size 8 and my aunt is a size 9, so I'm glad I ended up with 6.5 tbh; cos I LOVE shoes!!!

    I have size 10 feet - there, I said it :o

I'm currently wearing Vans I got in the mens dept. in TK Maxx for about €30. I do buy some pump-type girly shoes in Evans, but not too often and usually only if I'm up North or in London. I'm just glad mens shoes got a bit more colourful in recent times.

I loved shopping for shoes in New York - Payless Shoesource do up to a size 12 (US) in womens shoes, I think I bought about 4 pairs when I was there last year and they're all cute girly shoes that cost about $20.

I never shop in the womens shoe dept. in Ireland. I totally give up and it depresses the hell outta me. Think the last time I bought womens shoes in Schuh was when I was getting shoes for school. I used to wear the baggiest trousers I could find to hide my stoopid feet, but I had to give up on that. Only good thing about them is that I'm hard to push over in a moshpit.
