Video format/software

    Hey guys just want to ask your advice over the last while ive been converting some of my dvds to avi's and shrinking them down, ive been using Winavi which is annoying me at this stage due to all its bugs.

    Can anyone suggest a better format than AVI (poor) i was thinking about mp4 the main thing im looking for is a good size to quality ratio if anyone can suggest a format and the software to go with it, id be chuffed

    most of the time you are trading size for quality,nero can compress a 4 gig dvd down to a video cd (700 or so mb)

    I recommend Handbrake for encoding. I use DVDFab for the initial ripping. Both are free utilites.

    If you're after high quality/size ratio, you'll want to use the x264 codec. It's a lot more efficient than the old Xvid/Divx codec that you're probably using currently. But, on the downside it will take a lot longer to do the encode....that's just a choice you have to make.

    Handbrake has a good few presets, i'd recommend starting with the High-profile 'Film' preset, and working from there, doing a few test encodes (of just one or two chapters) etc. before settling down on your settings.

    yeah as soon as munstercycling mentioned it i checked it out it defo seems the perfect option
