    Hi Looking for some help.

Traveling to Portugal, FARO airport shortly.
Traveling with a baby who will be just coming up to three months old.
My wife does not want to bring our own car seat as she is afraid that it might be damaged by the cargo handlers - then when we get to Portugal it will be useless.

Was wondering is anyone familiar with car hire companies policies regarding - new born car seats. Are they available etc.

Heard there might be a specialised car seat company in the airport, but can't seem to get anyone to confirm this. Baby on Board.

    Help please.

    :D

Most of the rental companies have car seats but not a loads of them at their individual offices. I was in National/Citer last weekend in France and they had them piled up.

When booking your car hire make sure to choose a company where you can pre select a car seat.

My sister hired 2 last year one for her 4 month old and one for the 2 year old no problems.

    Welcome to Boards.ie colerf !

Try using this (Irish) site where you can select if you want a baby seat or not.

Europcar charge e8.80 per day for a Child Seat (1-3yrs). I think you'd have to ring them for a "new-born" baby seat as I'm not too sure if hire companies provide them or not. Best to confirm directly via email or phone.

Here are Europcar Faros details :

Just take it with you. It won't get damaged - they're built to protect babies in car crashes. You can always put the seat in a bag or box at check-in to help protect the fabric from scrapes.

If you do decide to hire one (most hire companies really take the p*ss with prices), make sure you book it when booking the car, but also phone the hire company's desk at the airport (not the main booking line) a day or two before you travel to make sure they've got one in stock.

You would need to check that you can take it on with you as sometimes it will count as one item of checked baggage which is no good as you will only be able to take one bag. Usually infants have no luggage allowence and only the buggy will be carried free on the cheaper airlines.

If you do decide to take it check with your carrier that it can be carried as an extra and free of charge.

True. Ryanair, for example, charge for child equipment. Some better airlines do not. However, a lot (incl. Aer Lingus) are going the way of Ryanair and charging for everything they can.
