    Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how much Rand to get for 5 days in Cape Town. Just for general pottering around, meals, a few tours etc - no big shopping planned.

    Anyone have any tips?

    Cheers,

    D.

Cape town is not expensive once you have accomodation. Tho some of the tours like shark diving /safaris can be pricey. Theres a tour shop at the top of long street, go in there and they'll go through everything with you.

I wouldnt take a lot of cash though - it's safer then JoBurg but there are still hustlers on the street. Just get 1000 rand at a time out of the ATM's...

Cape point tour is well worth doing, beautiful and you get to see penguins !

Apart from that kirstenbosch, all the museums/galleries on parliament street, the beach (tho its cold), stellenbosch winery, climb/walk kings head, loads of backpacker bars on long street.

    thanks for that...

I suppose 1000Rand with me on arrival should be ok - any tours and stuff can go on the card..

Sorry for the hijack. I'm flying to Johannesburg and travelling from there to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (bordering Namibia and Botswana). Just how bad is Johannesburg? And what's the easiest way of getting out :-)

i was in cape town last year, loved it... thought it was really good value.. a bottle of castle will set you back about a dollar...

sorry, but i did the whole world tour and my brain now works in dollars....

had a really nice tuna steak meal and a beer on long street for less than $10. nice.

tours can be pricey... why not check out couchsurfing.com

i had some great experiences with them... and cost a fraction of what a tour company would charge... and felt like a more authentic experience, with ie, went to a township with some locals for a brai (bbq) great experience, just paid 50c for the taxi and the beer and food was dirt cheap...
