I am interested in getting a few new plugins and I was wondering what each of you consider your top 5 "can't live without" plugins.

At the moment my top 5 (in no particular order) would be:

    UAD LA-2A
    UAD Neve 33609
    Waves RenEQ
    UAD Cambridge EQ
    UAD 1176LN

    liquid mix distressor

hmm. I thought the liquid has only EQ and compressors, no?

    cheers.

A distressor is a compressor though. It's used for reducing and controlling the dynamic range of the source material.

these are music production plugins and certainly wont work with winamp.

you need a dedicated software package such as protools, cubase, logic etc.

also a lot of the plugins mentioned here are DSP based meaning they need their own hardware (usually a pci or firewire card) to run them and others are native to specific software only (rtas plugs only work in protools).

thanks for the reply. any idea how much these software packages cost??

depending on the package that you're after anything from 200 (for a LE or light version of cubase) right up to 15,000 for a full protools HD system.

the plugins mentioned in this thread then cost extra as they are generally high end and dont come bundled with sequencer. so you're looking at about 1000 for a UAD2 card and about 250 per plugin to run on it. a liquidmix processor is about 400. the mcdsp bundles range from 400 up to 1500.

as you can see its not a cheap hobby

having said that mos "light" software packages come with their own built in plugins that are perfectly acceptable o learn on, then as you improve you'll generally start wanting a better sound and will spendd the cash to achieve it.

There's also REAPER, which you can try for free and then buy for €50 or thereabouts. It's not a light sequencer either. Sure download it -what have ya to lose? www.reaper.fm

    autotune
    melodyne
    vocalign
    drumagog
    sound replacer
    ssl drum strip
    g series eq
    guitar rig3
    chrome

I know they are most likely incorrectly spelled and we would all like great drummer guitarist vocalist and singer with great gear but that is not always so so these are my must haves

Drummagog and Guitar Rig aren't really solutions to a poor perfromance...more poor equipment.
