yes, cos the post office is also a bank - aka post bank!

I'd say most banks would cash a government cheque either, if you want to go that route.

    Incorrect.

The branch where I used to work in used to be plagued by people coming in asking us to cash social welfare chqs (because the chqs are all issued from the same branch).

Social welfare chqs are cashed in the post office where the benefit is issued from. Larger amounts can be cashed in the GPO. An Post won the contract for issuing social welfare payments many years ago.

I wish the Social Welfare staff would stop telling people they can cash chqs in the Bank (particularily the branch where I used to work). In fact from what I know a number of memo's were sent from my branch reminding the social welfare of the rules in place. The same memos were either ignored or not understood <Rant over>.

Post office can only cash up to €1200.

You can cash SW cheques under a certain amount at Post Offices if you have ID and your SW card but Postbank Ireland Ltd., ceased trading on 31 December 2010. Postbank Service no longer available at Post Offices and all accounts closed.
