Is exercise dangerous? On today FM 6.05pm today!

    So finally got this slot nailed down and it will be on today

    They said they would give it a good 10-12mins so hope it comes across well and will aim to get some plugs in.

    The topic is around a study done on triathletes and over training and also higher chance if injuries and sudden death. I am not 100% on wheter it will go down the road of exercise is going to kill you so take up bowls and walk your dog and you will be grand!

    Anyway listen in and they do a good job of podcasting when the show is over at 7pm so it can be linked.

    Any other sports being mentioned. I remember a site with listings of injuries. I think rugby topped it and weightlifting was way down the bottom.

    I think the standard measure is injury per participant hours, but couldn't be sure!

    I would say it was , I have currently a slipped disc fior a year l4/5, was doing tri training, could be the reason, shoulder dislocated rugby/GAA, Knee operation GAA

    I have to say though I have done a lot of sports and tried quite a few. But disc injury is the worst. Hoping to let is rest and then get into some weights like squats and deadlifting to build up total body strenght. Would say if I had done weight training when I was young may have prevent these problems.

    There is a table in Starting Strength on injuries per participant hour, yep. Weighlifting comes way down the bottom. Predictable ones like rugby and football up at the top.

    Interesting - especially as there is hard evidence of substantial heart damage after ironman distance triathlons. Wonder is this the study/research that they are talking about? If so its worth pointing out that its only IM distance stuff and the heart recovers after a few months.

    Most, if not all, of the triathlon related deaths occur in the swim. Pretty much all due to drowning. (Being knocked out or having heart attacks).

    The thing that I potentially see happening, and it annoys me, is that they'll say "top level competitive sports are dangerous (as evidenced by data), therefore you shouldn't exercise because you face the same risks".

    And that's the weakest, stupidest argument I've ever come across. Just don't mention Rhabdo!

    I actually think it's equestrian events; almost sure i heard on the news recently that the sport is under threat beacuse last year it had the largest death rate* of any sport.

    *whatever that means

    There would probably be exaggerated viewpoints on both sides in any debate on the dangers/benefits of exercise. On one side you'll have people making out that anyone who goes for a jog is risking dying like Marc Vivien-Foe or Cormac McAnallen. On the other side you have zealots like Rippetoe who claim that you need to bench, squat, press and deadlift to a certain level "to maintain a reasonable quality of life".

    Cooper thought he was being all smart and knowledgeable putting it to TF that Roy Keane said that Pilates extended his career, after TF saying that Pilates is ok but not as the main form of exercise blah blah, TF corrected him saying it wasnt Pilates but some other two words that about .003% of the polulation can pronounce and im not even going to attempt to spell whatever the hell it was!

    I thought it was a useful piece because there is still very much the perception that going for a walk a couple of times a week will keep you healthy, bit unfortunate that the Doc and transform were talking about different cohorts (complete couch potato's in the doc's case, people looking to maximise fitness in Transform's case) but still an interesting 5 minutes.

    the doc was right in most things he said but i totally disagee that going for a walk daily is enough to prevent degenerative diseases - cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc

    The rates of people who take regular exercise (twice per week or more) are very very low so i suppose if you get most people up off their ass then its a success - just a very depressing throught really.

    Our bodies were intended for movement not to be sitting on our butts all day - the vast majority are over fed and under exercised so its best in my opinion to make the most of your time through a proper program and optimal nutrition.

    Well I disagree with you and agree with the doc. Walking every day + good diet + being a healthy weight is going to give significant health benefits to the majority of the population. Doing more intense exercise is going to result in diminishing returns.

    A key aspect of exercising for health is to get into the habit of daily/regular exercise and keep it up for years and decades.The healthiest and longest lived people that I know are the ones that have been doing light-moderate exercise all their lives.

    OTOH I know several in their 50s and 60s that did more intense exercise when they were younger but now do little or no exercise, have recurring injuries that hold them back, need replacement hips and so on. They have no interest in and scoff at sedate exercise like golf or walking but their bodies aren't capable of doing what they regard as "proper" exercise.

    Also, re: cancer, it's not at all certain what effect lifestyle has on cancer, how do you know that daily walking will or won't help to prevent cancer? Countless billions have been spent on cancer research with thousands of papers published and still there is a lack of concrete information on what causes cancer or how to prevent it. The two major risk factors for cancer are age and smoking and after that it gets very controversial.

    Well....to be fair, what he actually said was:
    simply going for a 30 minute walk 5 or 6 days out of 7 is enough to give you significant heart benefits

    Assuming you're working up a sweat during that walk, I'd agree with it. I think 80% or higher of the population would greatly benefit from 30 minutes light aerobic exercise 5 times a week.

    edit: oooh, plug for boards!
