Greek Island hopping question

Hi everyone im fairly new to the site, but just from looking around ye all seem fairly helpful and there a fierce pool of knowledge between everyone so hopefull i can get some advice.

Im flying into Athens with the GF for 10 days with the intention of going out to the islands:cool:. Have a lot of research and info gathered but my main query, to anyone with any expierience here is whether to book transport(ferries) and accomodation myself or to go to one of the companies offering package trips(ie these fellas www.greeka.com)? Flights are booked with Aerlingus so its really just transport and accomodation once we arrive.

I've heard reports that the ferries are unreliable and there appears to be a certian secutiy to be gained from these trip organisers but you fecking pay them plenty for it:mad:

I'd like to wing it and just arrive and see what the crack is but the fact we have only 10 days kind of have to have it organised going over. I have no problem organising the thing, been interailing before so used to booking and all that jazz, my main worry is the erratic timetables of the ferries.

I have seen the other threads on Package v Indipendent and Island hopping but could not find the specific advice im looking for here, basically is it risky to DIY the island hopping and are these trip organisers good value?

Thanks in advance to anyone with any advice to offer.:D

    Do your own thing, Timo!

Yeah, ferry schedules are definetely subject to change, but that's all part of the appeal. If one ferry's not sailing, take another one. You might enjoy the unplanned island more!
Remember too, that a lot of agency's are exactly that- an agency who will book you on ferries you can book yourself! They're not offering alternative means of transport.

I read an old thread here with someone asking about island-hopping. The recommendations they got were for Crete & Santorini! I'm sure you'll make more of your island-hopping than the package holiday islands. You'll have a brilliant time if you do.:)
