External Hard Drive Damaged

    Hey,

Last night my Seagate Free Agent Pro 750GB External Hard Drive took a spill off the table onto the carpet. It only fell about a foot and a half but when I tried to get it going this morning it wasn't happening.

There is power going to it, and it lights up as normal but there's none of the usual mechanical sounds coming from it and my laptop isn't recognising that it's plugged up to it.

It's over two years old so it isn't covered by warranty.

Can anyone help by either A) suggesting a DIY way of retrieving my files and data or B) suggesting a repair place that specialises in recovery of data?

I have a lot of photos and music on it that I would really like back.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,

This happened me a while back. I had wired up the USB ports incorrectly in my new rig and fired the electronics of the HD enclosure. I just yanked out the drive and stuck it into the machine.

    It worked away fine.

You have nothing to lose by trying the same. If you don't have a pc to put it into you can buy a sata/ide to usb adapter in maplins/peats etc..

Give that a shot and it should work. If not then the drive itself is probably damaged. If this is the case and you want to retrieve your data it's going to cost you somewhere around two to three hundred bob just to recover it. You then have to buy a new drive to put that data onto.

All I can say is I absolutely hate drive failures..!! Hope its not the case for you!

I would be much more worried if it was making strange noises than none at all as there is a fairly good chance that it is just damage to connections between the casing and the drive.

First thing to do would be to open up the case and reset all the cabling and try it again (If the warranty is gone anyway no need to be too worried about damaging the case). If that doesn't work follow techguys instructions and put in in a pc, hopefully it will work fine.
