My garmin died when we reached the 50k mark at W200. I press the power button and.. nothing happens. If i connect it through usb it works and i can see the memory card and all. I tried to hold mode and lap to reset it but didn't make a difference. Any ideas? Also i bought it from handtek, should i sent it back to them or garmin directly?

    Cheers :)

Call Garmin, get an RMA number.

    Then send it to:

    Garmin Europe Ltd
    Liberty House
    Housdown Business Park
    Southampton
    SO40 9LR

Sorry don't have the phone number, I think it's on here but that page doesn't load for me right now.

    edit: see here:

I 've missed that thread and I actually had the 2.7 firmware from the day it was released. The file system doesn't seem to be corrupted though as i can browse all the files and folders, but the actualy os files might be corrupted.. hmm..

Haha, yes, I am intimately familiar with that address myself.

how does that sound so ominous to me...i don't like technology companies who i end up knowing their address off by heart :/

my worst so far was the diamond rio PMP300, 10 replacements in 6 months! ...it was an amazing pita sending them back to the states all the time(it was the first mp3 player though so i guess a few teething problems, 16megs of awesomeness!)

Try a disk check on the garmin device drive, then drop the old firmware back on and let it reboot.

Sadly though if the display isn't turning on, the screen is probably dead.

No the screen turns on when i connect it to the usb, only that part actually that shows that its connected. How do i downgrade the firmware?

    Instructions from Garmin as follows.
Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

Please connect the device to the computer, and
go to MyComputer. Right click on the Edge 705 and choose Properties.
Click on the Tool tab and click on the Check Now button. A pop up box
will appear. Please check mark both boxes and press Start. This is a
possibility that this could fix it, but not a guarantee, please retry
    the transfer after this.

If this is unsuccessful then the next step is a master reset, to do this
turn the unit off, hold down the mode button and turn the unit on. When
the unit asks if you want to erase all user data, select yes. After
resetting the unit, leave it with a clear view of the sky for about 30
minutes to acquire the satellite almanac.

Finally, please unzip the attached file and copy it to the Garmin Folder
on your Edge, unmount from the computer and restart the device.

    The device firmware is http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~ryaner/web/drop/GUPDATE260.zip

the link on there for the download, and copy it to the garmin folder and name it i think its gcdupdate ?(should be a filename like that there that you need to replace, once you reboot the device it should change the firmware to it)

The lesson I am learning from this thread is not to bother buying a Garmin any time soon.

The 705 is on my (christmas) wish list, but I have no patience with technology that doesn't do exactly what it's told and functions perfectly for at least the first couple of years of use.

If I was having the problems described here the Garmin would already have been smashed to pieces against the nearest wall.

Sorry, I know this isn't in the least bit constructive.:o

The thing is, I put up with only because it is such a fantastic piece of kit when it does work properly. There is really nothing else that compares on the market.

How many people's Garmins died on the W200? Seem to remember a few reports.

only other one i heard of was Caroline's , i'm having far more fun with the software after the event than the device itself.... anyone gotten sport tracks to ignore the auto-paused time properly?

That sometimes happens on longer rides -you should be able to open it in a text editor, and move the xml around to the right place, and it should be fine

My Sunnto watch died -- but I was swimming at the time. I went to their website and filled in a form and DHL came and picked it up... good service I thought.

Still going to sell it and buy a garmin 310:D

Number of things to try. all do different things.

Firstly, when you have the ride selected, click on the calculator symbol and change it to the pencil. That sometimes works.

Next to try is Settings. Then Display ->Analysis. Tick the first two boxes and recheck both on calculator and pencil.

Last, Settings. Then hit select view -> categories. Select Cycling (or whatever category you are using). Under Options, there is a stopped km/h value. Set it to something above 0. 2 works for me.

Mine locked up in the morning before the event. In fairness to Garmin, they really have the restarting down to a T in some case. Last real crash (before I got 2.7) and the device was back up and logging within 100m and me just hitting start again. You do have to fix the xml file but its much better than data loss.

Biggest data loss problem I have with the Garmin is me forgetting to start it! :)
