The man that the infamous Les Paul is named after... is 94 today!
The craziest thing is that he's still playing. He plays weekly at the Iridium club in New York.

That's him playing his main guitar, the not so popular Les Paul Recording model from the 70's. His personal guitars have his own custom pickups.

You have more to thank Les for than just his signature guitar.
He was also the inventor of multitrack recording... and what a wonderful thing it is! :)

Here's an interesting mini-documentary about Les

    :)

I was told by a luthier friend of mine that Les Paul is the greatest guitarist he's ever seen in his life and I really trust his opinion as a luthier and musician. I'd love to get a chance to see him in New York some time.

Haha, I like the way his main guitar is a very un-Les Paul-y Les Paul :p

    Two Bigsbys?? :p

You seem to know your stuff, could you tell me what that black/yellow thing he's got on the stand in front of him is? Tech 21 Sans Amp-y thing?

Edit: Looks like one of these, but his doesn't have a switch on it...

The guitar is also active. :pac:

That looks like the same Sansamp. I wouldn't be surprised if his is modded to have a flip switch instead of a stomp switch.

Yes, the Les Paul Recording, as well as the two bigsbys, has active, low-impedance pick-ups (the forerunners of EMGs), not P90s :p
It is, I have to say, a really ugly looking POS.
She could do with a wash and a scrub.

I'm keeping my eye on you, buddy. ;)

So what do all the extra controls do? Looks like an interesting guitar.

The pickups were quite literally the forerunners to EMG's. The company that made them were called "Dirty Works" and were later renamed to EMG.

The first two dials control the rate and depth of ass-kickage. The toggle switch at the bottom is for putting his fingers in series or parallel.

The selector switch above that is for selecting each pickup individually, or both together in super secret les paul mode.

The dial to the far right is for tone. Not mellow/trebly, but how Godlike it sounds. It only has one position. 11.
    Les paul is gay?

Oh yeah, they all were. Hendrix, knopfler, clapton. Jeff beck actually owned a gay blues club in london for a brief time in the sixties.
