Taking a second sick day. Does it look more genuine?

Right so, I took today off work as I overindulged a little last night. My excuse today was a migraine. Now I do actually occasionally suffer migraines so I know they can last a good while, a few days anyway. I've had a few sick days recently and I feel that work may have a fair idea that I was swinging the lead today. Do you think if a second day is taken off then it would lend a greater credibility to my story?

What adds most credibility to your story is how you perform in work on a regular basis.

If you're a slacker your sick days will probably be judged more than if you're a top performer.

    IMO

Given that I've just forward your boards.ie handle on to your work place I'd say you'd be better off going in tomorrow.

It won't make it any more credible....if you had taken Monday off then taking today off also would have made the story more credible because your boss would just think you took Monday off because you were on the piss on Sunday. Now he will probably just think you were sick.

Also if you plan on taking a Friday off and pretending to be sick it's better to take the Thursday off aswell so it doesn't seem like you're just saying 'F*ck it I aint coming oin cos it's Friday'

Well I've certainly had no complaints so far about my work, only compliments tbh, although I did get a friendly mention about my timekeeping.

I also have some things I could be doing tomorrow while off work, namely applying for two other jobs that I've noticed online and getting some stuff sorted out as I'm moving house soon so I could justify it to myself if I actually get the f**k out of bed and be productive.

Just can't afford to get the boot from this job as money is tight at the moment and any period of unemployment would be very serious for me.

    No.

It's much easier to fly under the radar when you just take the one day off. You're sorted anyhow as you took off a Tuesday, Mondays are dodge.

You'll get a lot more thanks from work if you go in tomorrow and just tell them that you have a touch of migraine but are going in anyhow.

The whole two day credibility thing has been around for a long time and nobody believes it.

It's not behaviour I'm particularly proud of but I just want to follow the course of action that will bring the least suspicion on to me.

Putting your obituary in the local rag usually does the trick, then employers will always be in awe of the miracle when you show up at work the following Monday.

I once worked with a fella who took 1 or 2 days because his Granny died, its fair to say the boss was shocked when he called to pay his respects and she answered the door.

Probably. But it's not a great time to be acting the shyte really, is it? Just go into work and make up a story about a newly tried take-way story, and vie to never buy there again.

    OP, You're great.

You know fine well you're not going to go in tomorrow. You only made this thread to see if anyone would give you a bit of support with your decision. I can almost hear you thinking of all the other, great things you could do if you weren't working.

I say, leave it to the weather to decide. If it's a nice morning, give them a ring and tell them your head is killing you. If its miserable, cold and wet, you may go in. Better to be getting paid to do something than sit around the house looking out the window saying "i should've went in!".

Best of luck OP. Just make sure, if you do take the day off, you don't go anywhere remotely near your work place (unless there's a chemist there, then if you're seen you can pretend you're getting tablets for the migraine).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,668 ✭✭✭nlgbbbblth

If you're suffering from a hangover and can't go to work why not just ring up and say "I was on the p*ss last night until xx AM. I can't come in to work today".

I've done it when I was younger. My employer appreciated my honesty.

The only way that would work is if your employer happened to drink more than you do / or is around the clock stoned.

Honestly no final decision taken as yet. I'm not a skiver by nature and I don't like being in this position. I've just had a kinda tough time and hit the booze a bit and have had a few days in late and a few days off. I just want to seriously do whatever would cast least suspicion on me.

i'd say take the 2nd day...when i got my review they treated one day off as drink related even tho they couldnt prove it...when i took 2 it was the same as one...as long as u ring in and tell them...keep ur excuse short and sweet so they cant catch ya out...have a good lie in but try and get work done..

Serial sick day takers really chap my ass, my Supervisor (who should be leading by example) has been out for a total of two full weeks to date, she is currently off sick.

Between me and the 3guys I work with we've taken about 3sick days between us so far this year, one guy was in a car crash (no too serious but a car crash is a car crash) and only took two days off...I know people who'd milk it for weeks, people like my supervisor.

Alot of the time people who take alot of sick days are usually useless at their job anyway and spend most of the day thinking up ways to get out of another day of work.

Just suck it up and goto work you hairy backed Marys.

    Protip:

Get a three day certificate from a Doctor.

Show up on third day with your cert and act really sick all day and make a big show of doing everything you would have done normally while constantly referring to the agonies you have been through the past few days and occasionally questioning your wisdom in coming back in a day early.

I think employers should be allowed to dismiss employees who pull this kind of nonsense. There are people who would give their left nut to have your job so they could pay their mortgage or feed their family and you can't be bothered to go in because you couldn't control your drinking.

You have to take the second day! It's the only way to make it realistic!! If you ring in sick for one day, it obvious you're hungover!!

Your second day trick normally will only work for people who hardly ever miss days.

Taking a tue or wed off isn't the most suspicious of days, mondays and fridays are the worst.

I say take the 2 days off now because if the boss doesn't believe you (likely) for one day then 2 days isn't really going to make it any worse really.

If you've been warned about it then start to worry. But they won't just sack you out of the blue for taking a couple of days off - unless they can prove your lying to them or your at it all the time.

Finally, it sound like you don't like your job... i know well how that feels :(
