Like most college graduates at the moment i'm in desperate need of a job. Can anybody advise me on what Dublin recruitment agency to go to as i am totally clueless on what exactly they offer and what their advantages are.

    Cheers

    All of them.

They all have different jobs really so there's no harm in applying to all of them. Good luck :)

If your a grad with no experience then your wasting your time with agencies - unless you want to work with the nazi supermarkets aldi and lidl (they hire grads and make them work 50-60 hour weeks) as some agencies do recruit for them. Take my advice write up a list of companies you would like to work for, find out the e-mail address for their HR departments and send them in your CV directly. Remember companies have to pay agencies a fee to take you on so your bet off going solo.

Cheers, is it advisable to apply for the likes of AXA etc even though they dont have any jobs advertised or would i be wasting my time

Robert Half. I've been with many over the years, these are the only ones who listened and got me the job i wanted and didn't hassle me about stuff i wasn't interested in. Be specific, locality, field, bus/no bus, drive/ no drive...etc, the interview with them takes a good forty minutes to an hour - But well worth it. As i've said, been with many and they were the only ones who were honest about the job interview they offered me, and were completely transparent and open to questions etc.

google robert half ireland, as they're worldwide, they have offices on Harcourt St, lovely offices too. Good luck!

And yes do email them all. I started in a similar field, and got my first post by emailing directly.

Do go with an agency too as it costs you zero money, and most companies do prefer not to bother with seeking out the employees themselves but would rather the agency compiled a list of candidates from which they will draw a shortlist for interview.

    What's your field?

I'm in Finance, Robert Half sorted me in about three weeks.

(I don't work for them, i just recommend them to everyone i know because the likes of Premier or Executive Connections have been awful for me, and one of those still ring me four years since i left them)

Yes dont worry about them advertising jobs or not - once you send in your CV you will be 'pooled' meaning the next time a suitable vacancy comes up they can give you a call and get you in for an interview.

If your specifically looking to get into insurance (ref AXA) I'd apply to start sitting the CIP exams and stick that on you CV - that will make you stand out big time because insurance firms usually pay for their staff to sit them.

This may have been true in the celtic tiger years but not anymore - HR staff are expected to source and find their staff independently now because of cost constraints etc. Plus any HR person worth their salt wouldn't need to use agencies in this market - there are 400k people unemployed for gods sake - any direct advertisements will generate loads of applications for companies - agencies are screwed in this market.

but with no experience, most agencies will want a work record......

I would look at emigrating if I were you, ie OZ, Canada......

Like a few here I would advise the direct route, especially as you are a grad.

I worked in recruitment myself for 2 years and none of my clients would look at grads because the fact of the matter is why would they pay an agency a fee for someone that may be totally useless in the job(not saying you would be,but it makes sense).

When applying for jobs myself I apply directly to the companies as I refuse to use an agency as I know how most of em work.

You can be a bit brazen about it and ring the HR department and ask for an email address to send in your CV.

Good luck to you,its pretty bleak out there, especially for grads.
