I'm heading to New York in July for 2 weeks with the family, there will be 9 of us.

I have done a lot of searching regarding cheapest dollars but I am still unsure what to do.

We are taking at least 15,000 dollars for the trip, this covers hotel aswell.

    The difficulty is:

Should I preload the credit card for shopping/eating (bearing in mind I will have currency conversion charges) & take some in cash - but how much?

Should I lodge it to the bank and use my Maestro card subject to 1.75% transaction charge & take some in cash - but how much?

Travellers cheques 1% charge & take some in cash - but how much?

or all in cash €2.60 commission.

So confused, I know cash is not the safest option but there is a safe in our hotel room & I know I will have to declare it to customs.

Most advice I have read says it is cheaper to use plastic than cash but is that still true since currency conversion charges appeared on statements.

    Greatful for all opinions.

Good grief, do not take $15k cash with you, that would be the worst idea ever. Bring some cash and then put the rest on the credit card.
