Bike height - confused!

    Hi again

Well tried out a few bikes at LBS at lunch and the 17/18" ones seemed to be fitting better than larger 19/20" frames. However, just rang a bike shop in Galway to see if they have a specific bike in stock in the 17" frame and they asked how tall I am. When I replied ~6ft/6ft 1", they said that a 17" frame would be crazy and that I should be looking for the 19" or even 21". I think the problem is that I have a long body and relatively short legs (mutant genes past down by my father).

Anyway, question is, when you are standing up on flat soles of feet, should your nuts be resting on the frame or not? I was guessing not, but I'd like to check.

Hard to say, it really depends on the geometry of the bike and your own body proportions. I have a 16.5" mountain bike which I am quite happy with at 5'10". The standover height is perfect, maybe the reach is a little short for longer spins on the road (I cycled out to Ballinastoe one day, might just have been that MTBs in general are less comfortable on the road than their roadie siblings).

I would have guessed* that for your height, 17" is a bit too small. Try and sit on as many as possible, get some proper information from the MTB people on here and in the shop.

Proper fit is essential, take your time. I am cleaning up my mate's bike, it's my old Giant SCR 2.0 which nearly crippled me on the W200 last year. Cycling it back home there was torture and brought back a lot of bad memories. I might take a photo later on of it and my current bike side by side and stick it up here.

What'll you be using the bike for?

If going off road you will need more clearance but even at that I'd say 18inch would be ok. I'm 5' 7" and have a 17" mountain bike for off road and I find it a good size for me.

Some people a more comfortable with a bike that's small for them but when it comes to mountain biking it's just important that it's not too big.
