CO2 emissions on 520d

I was considering buying a BMW 520d in the UK and went to calculate the VRT I would have to pay on it. When I completed the online Revenue form it gave me the options for the "available matching vehicles". One was "D E60 SE 04 DR (1995CC - 158g/km)" and the other was "D E60 SE 4 DR (1995CC - 136g/km)"!!!! What's the difference??? (and don't say one is a 4DR and one is an 04DR!). There is a big difference in the VRT on each, for a 2006 there it's €1,921! Can you convince the VRO fairly easily it's the 136g/km version you are buying?!!

It will be printed on the V5 form what the emmissions are.

Thanks PaintDoc, how can there be such a difference in CO2 emissions on 2 types of the same vehicle though? Is it a known issue that 2 different 520d 4-door saloons were made, one much more environmentally friendly than the other? If so, are there differences in BHP for instance?

The lower emissions one only came out in late 2007 on the 5 series so if its 06 you re looking at, it will have the higher figure. The 2006 model had 163 bhp I think and the newer cleaner one has 177 bhp I think. If you then were to buy an 08 model of that car, you will get it on the new road tax system costing you just 156/year tax. The 2006 you are looking at will be 600+ to tax. Imagine how hard it will be to sell 07 520d s in a few years with that difference in road tax compared to an 08 of the same car. 06 wouldnt be so badly affected as it will be cheaper than the 08 but it would still affect your resale value and potential.
Also, automatics will have a higher emission figure too so be careful what you buy. The uk V5 document will show clearly what the co2 is and that is what revenue work off.
Finally, if you go and buy a nicely speced example from uk, the revenue will charge for the extras on top of the quote from the vrt calculator. they work it as follows:
Calculate irish value of all extras when bought new.
Charge VRT on this value at same rate as you are paying on the car.
Then reduce this charge by 25% for a 1 year old car. 50% for a 2 year old, 75% ... 3 year old until there is no charge for extras on 4 year old or more as they are deemed to have no value at that stage.
The revenue typically check up your chassis number to find what extras are added and then proceed as above.
If I was looking for a 520d, I would buy 2008 if at all possible

There's also a fairly big difference between the manual and automatic.

Thanks a million for all the advice, makes much more sense now! I just knew the 06 wouldn't be the 136g/km!! :D

    "Efficient Dynamics" BMW called it.
Fair difference in price between a 2008 520d and 2006 520d. You'll be a long time saving the difference with your €450 per year saved on road tax.

Yes there is a difference in purchase price obviously but if you consider that these higher tax models will be welded to forecourts when 08 models become cheap, the pre 08 cars will have to be significantly reduced to sell as indeed they should be now so I guess if someone was buying an 06 now, it would have to be a very good bargain for it to make sense.

Yep, 520d without ED from 2005 to mid 2007, the Co2 is 158g/km. 520d with ED from mid 2007, the Co2 is 136g/km.
