Trains in Italy

So I'm going to Italy for the first time in August and I;ve booked the whole thing myself as opposed to going through a travel agent. We're gong to Rome first and then down to Sorrento (I presume this will be easy enough)

I'm just wondering about getting from Sorrento back to Naples Airport as this is where we are flying out from. Does anyone know if it is easy enough to do this...? We are flying with Aerlinus and willl need to be in the airport for about 10.30 in the morning. I have heard the trains in Italy are great but just hoping this part of the trip won't cause a problem.

its a good few years since I caught trains in italy, but i found them very good, very cheap but the timetable a little bit more of a guide than an actual schedule, especially the long distance ones (Remember that whilst your journey may be short, the actual train could be going from Rome to Vienna so could be a good bit late before it gets to your station).

One other thing to remember (If it still applies) is to "Validate" your ticket before boarding the train. there is a little clocking machine as you enter the platform that stamps your ticket. I forgot a couple of times and managed to get awya by playing the stupid tourist card, but they are quite strict with locals and you might get a jobsworth inspector.

the train from sorrento to naples is called the Circumvesuviana, a different company that runs the trains elsewhere in italy. the Circumvesuviana is a slow, inexpensive means of travel, it takes about 1hr 15 to go from sorrento to naples rail station, stopping all over the place

naples airport is about 5 miles from the city center so a taxi from the railway station should have you there in a few minutes

btw there is high-speed rail from rome to naples or conventional rail (which takes double the time and costs half as much).

The train from Sorrento to Naples is a bit crap. It's a slow, hot, packed and pretty dirty commuter train. Naples train station has a very bad reputation for theft. Keep an eye on your bags when you change there.

We took the train from Rome to Sorrento a few year ago. Rome to Naples was great, but we really watched our bags in Naples train station.

There are nice coaches that run from the main square in Sorrento directly to Naples Airport. We took one of these to get to the Airport. Much more comfortable. Slow, but nice views as it follows the coast. I'd take the bus over the train any day to get to the Airport.

I should also say, that we took many trains in Italy. Venice -> Verona, Verona -> Florence, Florence -> Rome, Rome -> Naples, Naples -> Sorrento.

All the City -> City trains were great, with only the Naples -> Sorrento commuter train not being very nice.

The coach is a good option but if you take the train be really careful in Naples train station. There are announcements constantly telling you to beware of pickpockets. People give out about Termini in Rome but I find that fine and always have a meal there before heading on to my next destination.
Also the taxis have fixed prices from the train station to the airport but that doesn't mean they won't try to scam you! ;)

I got a jobsworth inspector, or maybe I'm no good at playing stupid. In any case I was made pay a fine. I bought my ticket in Ireland, before I went, and it didn't need validation. However, I bought a supplement for the express and didn't realise I had to validate that.
