I have BA and LLB and 6 of the FE-1's done and passed! would i be stupid to try UK qualification instead at this stage given i am nearly there aside from securing an apprenticeship....

How do you go about going to UK?? and what are the requirements for coming back after qualification over there!! appreciate any advice!!

It would definitely be worth giving it a try if you are serious about qualifying as a solicitor. The six FE-1s may seem like a waste if you go to England, but they will be a waste if you cannot get an apprenticeship here.

It's relatively straightforward to come back, you basically just have to register with the law society. But you also have to get a job!

I have some experience of it if you want to PM me.

Also, what subjects did you do in the LLB, you might not be fully exempt from the GDL if you didn't do Admin Law or English Land Law

That is exactly what i was thinking..it seems a waste either way!

Do you not have to get a training contract in the UK as well or does the governing body just ensure they have contracts for enrolling students? Is that why it is perceived easier to qualify in the UK??

No i didn't do Admin or English Land Law i was working full time during the LLB and they were on at bad times for me so i wasn't able to attend..painful!

I really don't know what to do. I could do the NY Bar exams but I haven't even looked into them. I am very confused at the minute as to what exactly my future holds I would love to do this and I will stick at it either way but I just want to ensure I go about it the right and smart way!

I guess I should get onto my career guidance office at my old college!

Thanks, I really appreciate the reply.

You would have to do an academic year doing the GDL, but could probably do it by distance if you only had to do a couple of modules as you would have most law subjects done.

Then you would have to do the LPC which is pretty much another academic year.

You can do either of these without an apprenticeship secured.

After that you need to do two years apprenticeship to qualify. Most people have a training contract secured though before doing the GDL or LPC.

I wouldn't say it's easier to qualify at all. There are obviously more places, but more candidates too. You might differentiate yourself more by being Irish.

A lot of their training contract application deadlines are 31 July IIRC.

    See http://www.lawcareers.net/Solicitors/TrainingContractDeadlines.aspx

Some of the bigger firms do work experience at Xmas too.

It's definitely worth looking into if you are serious about qualifying as things are going to be tight everywhere for the next few years.
