Heading to Thailand on Saturday for 6 weeks. Am going to be in Bangkok for about a month as my boyfriend is training in Thai boxing. Any ideas how to fill in time for a few weeks? Thinking of doing a Thai cooking course for a few days but after that?
We are hoping to go to vietnam for a week at end of June/ beginning of July. Is it cheaper to book flights when we are over there or should we book it from here before we head?
Any ideas on how to get the most out of Vietnam in one week?

It used to be cheaper to get flights from any travel agent on Khao san road. Make sure you know what you are getting before parting with money though.

You can also book online over there. Be real careful with creditcard details on internet cafe computers though.

Hard to do a lot of Vietnam in one week. Depends on what you want to see. You might be better off picking a region & seeing it properly rather than trying to cover too much ground. Have a look at the lonely planet website. Lots of ibnfo there on both Thailand & Vietnam.

Other options in the region are Laos (fantastic) or Cambodia (Ankor Wat). Both of these can be done overland from Bangkok.

What sort of stuff would you be into at home? Do you know where in Bangkok you will be staying? Will you be able to take short breaks away and if so for how long?

Thanks for the useful advice. We are staying in the Ratchadapisek Road area. Not sure exactly where it is but we are staying there as my boyfriend is training in a gym in that area. i am open to ideas and tend to try different activities when I am travelling. We will be on a limited budget but still want to make the most of our time when we are there. We will deal with the banks when we return!!!

Most of the cookery courses in Thailand seem to be of the 1 day variety, but you might find something more long term. ... You could also look into doing a Thai Massage/Yoga/Whatever else course yourself. Otherwise you might get a little bored....

In terms of trips I'd buy tickets over there, and priority number 1 has to be to Angkor, which is something like 12 hours on a bus, or 1 hour flight. Theres a rumor that the road from Cambodian border to Siem Reip (closest town to Angkor) is left is a deliberately awful state as a result of bribes from Airlines.

Another trip I'd recommend would be to Hanoi, which is by far the most interesting part of Vietnam IMO, and allows trips to Halong Bay and Sapa.
