    Afternoon folks,
The sister in laws '98 Astra seems to have given up the ghost, in overheated and conked on the M50 over the weekend, she let it cool down and drove it to my house where it's been sitting since.

It's a relatively low milage (82K) 1.4 Astra, not worth a whole lot I know but it's worth more to her as a car than she'll get for it so if there is any chance of having it fixed up she'd take that option.

I checked the oil level and it's like sludge so it could be the bearings (or whatever the worst thing that can go in an engine is called) she had it serviced recently but I suspect there was severe oil deprivation bef0re the service.

Are there any decent mechanics in the Castleknock/Blanch/west Dublin area that she could bring it to and get an honest appraisal of the best thing to do with the car?

    Thanks
    V

I've used Ellis Poynton Motors up by the Church in Blanch. Found them good and reasonably priced. Sounds like it could be the head gasket gone.

Sounds like the head gasket is gone. Very common on these cars and most mechanics have done one. You'll have to get the head skimmed aswell as the head gasket set, and do the timing belt kit and water pump while your there too. Could be pricey enough and might not be worth doing depending on the value of the car. :(
