It's available for £1125 on www.Richersounds.com ,a good saving on Currys price of £1350 :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,402 ✭✭✭andy1249

would you fit it into a 5 door hatchback?

Absolutely not , the thing is humongous .... seriously , no way will it fit in a hatchback , its huge out of the box , never mind in it.

Richer sounds will deliver to the south , but I think they charge £20 or more for this.

Thanks for the info, but I think it is only available to buy in store rather than on the net? Its not showing on their .ie website so not sure if you can get it in the north

Seamus watters near Crossmaglen is selling the g10b 50' for around €1300

I'll go north or south of the border to get same.

I persume that a UK website like currys lists prices that are applicable both to N.Ireland and the rest of the UK?

For anyone who has bought this tv or a similar 50" model - would you fit it into a 5 door hatchback?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 248 ✭✭ratsam

A second for Watters in Crossmaglen. Their prices vary slightly with exchange rates etc but I'm getting a 50inch for the same money as I was quoted for a 42inch locally...! Great to deal with too.

P50G10L (Irish Model) is now available 1439.95 online with Power City - http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-14-P50G10

This is by far the cheapest I've seen the Irish model down south. Also give the "haggling" a go and chances are they'll knock more off, as I have just experienced ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

That is a good price for down south considering i'm being quoted 1400 from seamus watters at the moment. How much did you get the price down to after haggling?

Also does anyone know if the more advanced settings like gamma control are available in the irish model as they are not in the uk model but they are in the european models.

I personally think this is a great price considering places in Dublin City are still trying to get €1,749 - €1,879 for the same model. I got the price down to 1375 in the end :D and hopefully am picking it up tonight (the price is ex delivery but they are only up the road, which is good for any faults during the first year anyway). Once I got them to that price I went back to the website where they initially had been offering it 1549 and to my surprise they had already dropped it to 1439 so not sure how flexible they will be now but sure worth a punt.

If they get the tv in tonight I will check out the gamma settings and report back. But anyway, being the Irish model will help resale value especially in a few years when DTT is common place. Oh and finally, I caught a quick glimpse of their stock levels on their POS, said they had 5 or 6 left nationwide.

Well now i'm really interested, wouldn't mind getting one tonight myself if they are that price. You got a great deal. After a little research I found out the Irish models have gamma controls and white balance controls.

The lack of these in the english models has really put me off as i've heard that the out of the box settings are a little washed out because of the factory set 1.9 gamma level when it should be around 2.2.

Did you haggle over the phone or in store? I can't seem to find a contact phone number for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭nuttlys

I just used the haggle box thing they have on their website, not expecting much. Sent in a 'haggle' around 6pm yesterday and got a call back around 8 saying they would agree. Best if you say your quoting up north (thats what i did). Very fast TBH and very easy to deal with. Just went down to local store (8.30pm), they rang the call centre to confirm the price agreement and that was it. Unfortunately they didn't have any in stock in my local store so they are transferring from another. Said good chance here tomorrow (today) or latest Thursday. Gonna ring them at 6 and see. Fingers Crossed! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Ah nice, pity their site keeps going down :( They have the worst automated phone system i've used as well, I have no idea how it works, asks me to enter my number but doesnt respond to my entry. Can't get in touch with them at all now.

Did you have to pay online or can you reserve it and pay in store? Also did you have to provide details on where you say an offer up north?

    Thanks for your help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭nuttlys

their site is still up now - on my end anyway. Haggle Box link - http://www.powercity.ie/index.php?action=priceq

I was asked for a €20 deposit at the till yesterday on the way out.

I quoted Watter's but they never asked for any proof. As I said was all very easy for me. (My sister thinks its all a bit too easy - but if don't try you'll never know)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

I've been trying that for hours but the site won't stay up for any more than a minute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭nuttlys

hmm. well i guess you can run down to your local store. From what i picked up the call centre has the final say, so if you haggle with the sales guy he'll ring up the call centre there and then and ask. Might work better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Ok I managed to send it in the haggle box and an agent got back to me in under an hour. Pretty damn fast, I made an offer of 1350 and it was accepted.

That's matching pricing in the north so really that's a great deal considering the Irish model is superior to the english one. I will hopefully be collecting it tomorrow. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭nuttlys

well done, beat me by 25

still I am real happy with the deal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Yeah so am I, it's great. The customer support is also fantastic, I got a further call from the girl at the help desk who found the nearest store that had one available to me and is now contacting them to arrange it for collection tomorrow.

She is going to call me back when it's all sorted and I can pay in store on collection. Pity they don't have more stores nationwide.

Thanks again for bringing this offer to my attention :D

    -edit-
The agent got back to me again, she has one held for me in one of the stores, she e-mailed me the invoice and they will hold it until tomorrow. Really this is what customer service should be like.

Just looking on the Powercity site and the price difference between the 46" and 50" isn't much. Would the 50" be too big when sitting about 10' from the screen? Watching mostly SD Sky+ but getting a WD TV player soon for HD movies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

    720p-1080p-viewing-distance-tv-size-chart.jpg

According to this chart, at 10 feet from a 50" screen, you'd see the full benefit of 720p. Sounds like it might be slightly too big for full time sky SD watching in that case! 46" would be somewhat better, but not much!:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,402 ✭✭✭andy1249

The problem with the above chart is that in reality they are so clearly flawed!

Even a 32 inch TV , and in some cases much smaller , show a clear improvement between SD and HD content at any distance , in contrast the previous poster shows from the chart that a 50 inch is needed to see the benefit of 720p .... which is quite clearly not true as anyone who has ever looked at a HD ready screen of any size will know !

This chart , and the many many others like it , are clearly based on false or mistaken information somewhere along the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭Cmar-Ireland

That's what I thought! Although it's hard to pass up the 50" when it's only a few euro extra.
Must be sensible though, probably best to go for a 46".
    Cheers!

Edit: Andy go in ther just before I posted. So a 50" might not be too big then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Go for the 50, it's only a little exta. I received mine yesterday and its perfect. Picture quality is amazing and it's only going to improve.

I also sit about 10 feet away and to be honest it looks great at that distance. I was expecting standard def to look terrible on it but it actually looks good but with any hd content it really comes into it's own.

Those charts make no sense to me to be honest, at that distance I see no artifacts or pixels or anything except an amazing picture.

The out of the box settings need a little tweaking tho. At least we can do it with the Irish model.

Just ordered myself a Panasonic G10 50" and its being delivered tomorrow. What are the best connection cables to use to achieve the highest quality when viewing a DVD or Sky, SCART, HDMI. I've also upgraded to SkyHD but the connection wait is currently 2 months.

HDMI if you have a blu-ray player. If you're current sky box and DVD player are only SD, then get a good quality gold plated scart lead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,402 ✭✭✭andy1249

then get a good quality gold plated scart lead.

The most important thing with a scart lead is that its fully wired , that means all 21 pins connected and that its a good fit.
A fully wired scart means you can enable RGB which is the best way to set up the source.

Gold does absolutely nothing to help the signal , it just looks good .

Panasonic site has d.i.d listed so you can get a 5 yr warranty, they have the 50" for 1400ish, what if any faults does the g10 have that you can name.

also with the freesat has any one got this setup with a sky dish (i have sky+ but one extra connection on sat)

Why is the Irish model superior to the English one? Doesn't the English have freesat which the Irish doesn't, while the Irish one supports DTT here but the English one doesn't? There isn't any other differences is there?

The Irish model can decode DTT and it also have more adjustments for pictures settings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 350 ✭✭HappyHarry

While the Irish model can decode irish DTT, it cannot do MHEG5!

AFAIK the UK model can do MHEG5 but I'm open to correction on that.
It is also entirely possible that the UK set can recieve Irish DTT, but you will have to wait for someone to verify. People selling Irish models will tell you not, make your own mind up!

If you want more than early to bed 1-4 you are going to need another source of channels, so you may be adding a Set Top Box anyway. If it's Sky or UPC you'll get Irish stations from them so no need for inbuilt irish DTT.

Remember that if you have two seperate tuners for TV that will be two EPGs and switching of source to go from a channel on one source to a chanel on the other.

As Watty would say, forget about the tuners for now. Get the TV that has the features \ qualities that you want or like and plenty of HDMI inputs.

They cannot scan the Irish DTT channels - verified already.

Yeah it was 'verified' on the engineering tests, by a retailer of the Irish models and on a differnt model. I'm convinced!

That doesn't necessarily mean that when Irish DTT is live whatever G10 B firmware is the latest at the time cannot recieve irish DTT. We simply don't know.

None of the Panasonic Freesat models can scan the Irish DTT channels and Panasonic have no intention of upgrading the firmware to accomodate Irish owners. They've stated as much to posters on the Terrestrial forum already.

And if you still think that the G10B will receive the DTT channels, PM 'ratsam' and ask him how he got on with his.

Why are you not convinced? nobody knows if it will work on the full DTT whenever that actually starts broadcasting.

i am in one of the best positions to test, i have irish models working with DTT in its current state. i have the V10B and it wont work. I highly doubt that the G10B would work and the better specced, more expensive V10B wouldnt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,560 ✭✭✭✭Varik

if the g10b wont work with irish dtt

will the g10l work for the english dtt aswell as the irish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 350 ✭✭HappyHarry

    big moe,

i'm not convinced because the service isn't live yet.
As it is, go get the 7 day EPG on my G10 I have to set the country to France.
Otherwise I only get what is on now and next for each channel.

Having the TV set to France, puts the channel numbers in the 800 range, although I've gotten around that by adding them to Favorites.

Also the G10L which is supposed to be tailored for the Irish market doesn't support MHEG5, WTF! Surely this will be fixed by a firmware update?
Or did Panasonic really release a high end TV model specific to the Irish market specifically to cater for DTT put purposly leave out the MHEG5 support?
Doesn't the UK model support MHEG5?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,558 ✭✭✭netwhizkid

I have a 32" G10L LCD Irish version and it receives DTT but does not have MHEG5 also unlike the English G10B it also does not support "power on preference" which sees the TV switch over to whatever is inputting on HDMI port 1 like Scart auto switch does. In my case aI have a Sky+ HD box on HDMI port one and it is a pain in the backside having to go pressing AV or "Help" on the Sky Remote to change channel everytime especially for my techno illiterate parents.

    Heya,

I don't suppose you have a link to the 50" G10 on the D.I.D site do you as I can't find it anywhere, just the 42" and 46" models.

Also I rang a D.I.D store about the 50" and they said they could order one in for me but at a price of E1700.

Where did you see the price for 1400ish on the 50"? Would love to pick up one at that price!

I posted away the 5 year warranty and it came back recently so it was about 5 weeks. Had no problems filled up the form and returned with a photocopy of the receipt and all was fine and my TV is now guaranteed until 2014... sweet! :) This offer has been extended until the end of August too I think as for some bizarre reason I have ended up on the mailing list of the Electroplus electronics group and get emails destined for trade customers. Some of the marks ups made on things are absolutely frightening.
