    Hey,

I'm 30 Polish national, working as an IT guy (networks and virtualisation) for one of the financial institutions... My wife is a civil servant here in Ireland, my kid lives here for most of the life. We've been living in Ireland for over 6 years and I feel it's time do decide what do we do next. My wife is really into buying a house here, so am I, but........

Recently I've noticed a few of really rude remarks, an irritating scum-like behavior that didn't seem to take place before. Even today, crossing the road (in the right place) in front of a car that just stopped to let me through - a guy on the bike popped out from behind the car and shouted "watch you pr...k!!!" But I was in the right, what even confirmed other drivers... Nevermind.

My question is: should I stay or should I go now? Would you buy a house here if you were me? It's not a matter of money, mortgage, etc. Would you tie with Ireland for good? I love this country, I always did, but if it's citizens don't want me here and will take all possible steps to turn my life into hell - well, what's the point?

Hey, Citizens: what's your advise on that?

    Regards,

    Phil

You are assuming the guy knew you were Polish. Maybe he didnt and would have said it to anyone.

Maybe you're right... He could have possibly said that to anyone..

I meant that the overall attitude changes, adding to that "bloody foreginers, taking our jaaaabs (dunno Citrix but whathever)" may work bad for me in the end. So that I don't know if it's worth to invest 350.000 euro in buying a gaff here.

Ah, there's also loads of decent folks here I am being a good friend with, but those "evil" ones may become worst pain in the hole ever.

But how could he have know you were Polish?

TBH, if you're that sensitive, you'll perceive insults anywhere.

He couldn't have.. I don't shave my head, I'm not well build and I was wearing an Arnotts T-shirt ;) Boards are full of "How do the Poles look like" I guess.

I don't think I'm oversensitive. It's just that I'm a positive person, peaceful and quiet, I was having a great day, had loads of laugh with my wife today, weather wasn't bad too - and someone who fcuked up himself and nearly crashed into me shouts at me "pr..ck"?? What the hell?

Anyway, lets forget about that incident. What about the house? What would you do if you were in my shoes?

This can't have been the first time you've had words with someone in the street though? I'm very surprised it upset you so much.

I will never buy a house in this country. My plan is to save up until I'm 45, then retire and move to Thailand and live in peace.

@ fasterkitten - would you believe it was the second time, both happened recently. Never experienced ANY bad treatment for the past 6 years. Am I lucky?

@ Kidchameleon - Thanks for that. You deserve a pint.

@ [-0-] - Well, I'd love to do it (dreaming of NZ or South America myself), although my wife really wants to settle down, maybe have another child, have a little garden... How long can we move for? Every 5 years change jobs, schools, friends, habits...Start from scratch... I think Ireland is just a perfect place, but here's my concern - is it a safe, good place for immigrants like us, who want to live here, pay taxes, get citizenship and just be happy? If it is, is there any possibility for this to change?

    Hi Phil!

You seem like a good humoured easy going guy. The fact that someone shouting 'Pr*ck' at you was upsetting shows that you have good sensibilites.

Well I for one think that that's exactly the kind of person I want living in my country! I hope you stay and keep your good outlook on life. Have new babies, a garden, a community and keep on shaking your head at people who shout obscenities.

The more people like you we have in our country the better.

Also, times are pretty tough atm, and people are more stressed out then they've been. I know nearly everyone I know is worried about keeping their job or has their hours cut and some have lost their job. I think give people the benefit of the doubt and if you've had no problems at ALL for the last 6 years then great! Don't let a couple of people letting their temper get the better of them get the better of you!

    Best of luck !

Surely you should be making your choice based on your last 6 years of living here and not two unfortunate incidents.

I think if you're wife wants to settle down here thats a pretty good reason to stay.

Houses are still massively over-priced buying one now would be a bad decision from a financial perspective. I'd advise that you wait for now, carry on as you are while you can and make a decision in a year or two.
