Why not exchange it for an Irish one? Far simpler.

Just be aware if you change your UK license you may lose some entitlements.
Not all vehicle classes will be transferred from UK to IRL licenses.
I know of several people that transferred and lost the ability to drive minibuses etc.

Far simpler to get penalty points on the Irish one also ;).

This is correct, you cannot get points on the UK license. I got one before moving home to Ireland for that very reason.

    Thats a good one...

But are the fines more than the people with Irish Licence.

No the fines are the same just no points, this has recently been confirmed on the traffic blues programe on RTE.

Not strictly true. you cannot get points on a UK licence only pay the fine.

However under the treaty of Dublin the country in which you are caught (Ireland) creates a file on the offender. If the offender offends to a level which would have lead to a disqualification (12 points), the licensing authority (Ireland) can apply to the country of issue of the Licence (UK DVLA) who can put it before a magistrate who can then disqualify the licence holder from holding a driving licence.

    Complex but it can happen.

I thought all taxi drivers had to have an Irish Licence for this very reason.

I will make it sure i dont touch 12 points , just keep it under that

The Irish licensing authority cannot handle our own system, never mind follow through on a complicated procedure like that.

photocopy your uk licence before you exchange it, that way you can check they have transferred your entitlements to your new licence.

They won't transfer them, once they are gone they are gone.

You'd probably find it easier to get an NI one.

I suppose the question is whether you have moved residence, or are just on a an extended visit.

That will tell you how much I know but any idea on how I change it over. I will have an address up there and be up there for a duration of a year. Would I be able to avoid getting points with the NI Licence?
