Nearly went back to Spar earlier with a dud lighter as for the life of me i couldnt light the feckin thing. Now ive seen the "hold it 40 degree and press thing"s etc but this one had my head wrecked. For an hour (drunken hr) i was pressing and leaning trying to get it to work convinced it was broken. No! This contraption (sp??) was in a whole different ball game..press in and then down...sounds easy..hehe..im glad i figured it out before i made a show of myself bringin back a "faulty" product back to the shop!

Childproof stuff..if a kid had of got that thing working i wouldve given my life savings and then some convinced it was broke.

That particular kind is the only one that I don't believe a child would struggle with. The hard-to-click ones would be impossible for a small kid to use.

Who gives a toss whether a child can use it or not? I'm far more likely to drunkenly burn my house down when i light up off the gas stove because of those infernal push and click lighters, the lil bit you've to pull out ALWAYS slips

The one's with the wheel that you have to kinda spin were really hard to use as a child because it was hard to generate enough power.

I think most children will figure out the new ones before some adults...

How can a lighter tell if it is an adult or a child using it?

Well I did what the OP nearly did!!
I got one of those lighters in a petrol station and as usual try them before I leave the counter AND said it wasnt working. The guy showed me how it worked.
    I was mortified!:o

I wonder if the child-proofing has actually made an effect on the number of kids injured by lighters.

They're a freakin' nuisance :\ the amount of old people that I have to explain to about how to use them !! one poor woman didn't have the STRENGTH to push it down so I had to go outside and light it for her
